"The Doctor might be an Emergency Medical Hologram, but he's more than just a bit of hardware." That's because he's not hardware at all. The Emergency Medical Hologram is software stored on Voyager's hard drive. He can also be downloaded into a mobile hologram emitter from the 29th Century.
Dr. Dana Scully? She never cured anyone, but she gets combat pay for all those autopsies. And Gillian Anderson did get the honor of being named "the thinking man's bombshell" by Rolling Stone magazine.
Doctors, scientists, and soldiers are probably the most represented professions in Science Fiction. This only a list of twenty fine examples. As much as I hate having to play the "What No ___" Card I feel there is a terrible lack of medical characters from books. Allow me to suggest the wonderful Sector General stories from Irish author James White.
These started as short stories in the early 60s an now span a dozen books (the first six are better). Sector General is a huge space station dedicated to the care of all species and promoting peace in the galaxy. The staff and patients are from a wide range of brilliantly imagined and very different alien races. No lame-o bumpy heads here.
The doctors use Educator Tapes to download knowledge of treatment for all the different species. These tapes contain not only the experience but also the personalities and behaviors of alien doctors. It can be very funny when a doctor has a desire to sleep in a cocoon can no longer stand the taste of food appropriate to her species. The Educator Tapes can also of course drive a doctor insane.
The very strong pacifist message in the Sector General series comes from White's own experiences during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. There is a sense of dedication and purpose in his desire for interstellar peace that makes the sentimentality of Star Trek seem like warmed over mush.
If you enjoyed ST: DS9 and Babylon 5 and are intrigued with the notions of downloaded skills and personalities in Dollhouse, please treat yourself to these great stories from back in the day.
