I don't think I like these at all. how are we to know what forums have already been created? how do I even know what to look for?
another thing: I looked for a Chicago forum by doing io9.com/tag/chicago. I got all comments that merely mentioned Chicago, without a hash tag. this seems like nothing more than a clumsy aggregate. it's definitely not an effective way to communicate. #io9mastercontrol
I have a request/suggestion regarding the forums: Can we have some way of browsing them please? Like, maybe, a link to a page showing all threads by most recent post? #io9mastercontrol
@Guang: A number of have been saying this below, but I feel like we are speaking CharlieBrownTeacherese because they are not understanding us and responding.
That and they seem to want to stubbornly cling to a needlessly complicated, clunky system because it's new and techie and cool rather than have a boring, old fashioned effective, user friendly system. #io9mastercontrol
@Motoki: Glad to know I'm not the only one. I'd love to keep up with the bleeding edge of tech, but just not possible here in China with everything blocked. I need at least a Dummies guide to...
It looks like they got rid of the useful "click here to see the 3 posts that people have responded to" button too. #io9mastercontrol
I am so incredibly confused. Going to #doctorwho (for instance) it's just all the comments from the last article on the subject. But that's not a forum, that's just a bunch of people's comments on an article. Which I could see just by, you know, going to read that article's comments. #io9mastercontrol
@samarkand: @gorehound: Welcome to the future. We make things needlessly more complicated for you. The time you save on convenience you spend trying to figure things out.
@Motoki: Check it out now. I started a seperate forum thread about the new TARDIS. I went to the box on the main page, changed #'calendar' to #'doctorwho' and a few minutes later, my comment/forum post went up.
@samarkand: Hmmm. That is weird. I responded to your comment while in the #doctorwho "forum." Interesting that it doesn't pop into the post here, even though your comment is in the post.
Check out your hashtag again. I created a forum question re: the new TARDIS. I went to the box on the main page, changed #'calendar' to #'doctorwho' and a few minutes later, my comment/forum post went up.
I think that is how it is supposed to work. People can rant all they want about how the TARDIS should be red, not blue, or green, or purple, or whatever color, hashtag it #'TARDISshouldbered' and others that looks for it, can find it.
No one yet created a "forum" post about #doctorwho yet, so you wouldn't see anything other than comments on #doctorwho articles.
@samarkand: I am as well. I tried looking for a Starget Universe forum and I think I just ended up posting the word "universe" somewhere. #io9mastercontrol
Off topic, but dear God I hate Natalie Portman in that outfit. It captures all that was wrong about the Star Wars prequels. Dear Natalie Portman: you will never, never be as badass as Carrie Fisher. The costumer should not have tried to pretend you could compare. Now go apologize for Roman Polanski some more. #io9mastercontrol
@Adah: Wow she apologized for Polanski? I agree with you on the outfit though, it was just an excuse to show off some skin and curves albeit it was very little, that possibly on Polanski would in fact be the only one attracted in the 50+ age group. #io9mastercontrol
@SuperTuna: None of the settings work. But don't worry, they'll take another shot at it again in a few weeks.
Oh, Consumerist layout, how I miss you. #io9mastercontrol
@Davio: I did, too! I had one for about a month, then it went away for no reason I could discern. At the time I sent an e-mail to Gawker asking about it, but I never got a reply. #io9mastercontrol
@SuperTuna: yeah, i've tried that a few times being inventive with, "why am I being D9'd"... no one got it... i figure you gotta do the time maybe... but what's the time really? I spend an inordinate amount of my time (both work and leisure reading through the wonderful stories on io9 to be heartbroken that no one cares to read what i think :-( ) #io9mastercontrol
@sicboi: I spend inordinate amounts of time here too. As long as the post isn't too old, I get into each post to see what people (starred, greys, and reds) have to say multiple times. I think that the io9 Stars promote comments way more than Giz, Jalop, 'Spin, & Lifehacker. I frequent those sites at work too, and used to be able to bring greys into black type, but no more.
So in short: fear not, your stuff is read. I'd also check out Grey_Area's comment here: [io9.com]#io9mastercontrol
"starred commenters can also create forums." While people like me that are on this site all the time are considered second class people. Have Io9 ever heard of equal rights? #io9mastercontrol
@cadrina: I've found a way around this: it doesn't matter. My sense of worth isn't defined by some arbitrary star system. Most of the actual star members here read and respond to most of the non-star comments anyway.
So the system works fine as long as you don't worry about some elitist arbitrary rule that was designed to only make the rule-makers themselves happy. The people who actually USE this site, couldn't care less about some elitist star system thing. At least that's what I take from it.
As far as forums, I post on the internet enough. I actually prefer commenting on articles like this than just being a part of another random forum. #io9mastercontrol
@Garrison Dean: R.O.A.C.H.: I've been to Branson, saw the asian dude play the country fiddle when I was a kid. He was a star in my eyes, if only for a brief moment.
@cylon_conspiracy: Because of your avatar I imagined Gaius Baltar giving that speech on the evils of elitism and the Adama, err, star system and it was kind of awesome. #io9mastercontrol
@Garrison Dean: R.O.A.C.H.: I love it when you're around.
You Bransons really ought to be happy. You don't have to see the crap that shows up in the pink zone. It's scary stuff -- I'm always relieved when it's merely trite or redundant. #io9mastercontrol
@Evil Tortie's Mom: R.O.A.C.H.: Oh please, try being the poor schmuck who auditions all that junk. Trolls, illiterates, spammers, sockpuppets, crackpots of every stripe. #io9mastercontrol
@Evil Tortie's Mom: R.O.A.C.H.: Yah, I'm getting more particular.
Thing is, some commenters seem totally cool and have brilliant things to say. One is juuust about to starify them, but then *bang* and it's all, "Whaaaah, where's my star? Whhhaaaahh!!!"
Not the right way to get noticed. #io9mastercontrol
@Grey_Area: I don't mean to whinge, but the thing is that I *had* a star, and then lost it for no reason I could determine. I get no response at all when I ask about it, either here or at the "getsatisfaction" support site. It would be courteous for someone to at least acknowledge us who have been de-starred and let us know why. I realize it's not important in the larger scheme of things, but imagine how you would feel if tomorrow your star were gone? #io9mastercontrol
@dirtybacon: When it was rolled out, Deadspin posted some of Denton's letter about it, and they (he?) expect some of the abuse. Here is some of it:
We have no idea what uses people will make of these forums. But we suspect that many of them will be mischievous. And that's fine — because we like mischief too. [deadspin.com] #forum
@Ruthless, If you let me: Yep, the only thing that was sure was that readers would find unexpected ways to use these forums. And they'd use unexpected hashtags.
The tag pages haven't been particularly friendly to comments the last few days. A lot of initial bugs. And it was a bit weird having the comments over on the right. But this page seems to work pretty well.
@Bongoes: I like to hate on it. I mean good god -- I'm still watching Smellville, and it's sucked since back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth... #io9mastercontrol
@Chuck: Yeah, the best part of watching Heroes and Smallville for me was mind-syncing with the terrible writers and perfectly predicting the next cliched line. #io9mastercontrol
@Roklimber: Maybe you need to create a forum that is manually updated with forum listings. And then you can create a forum to notify people that you created a forum that has forum listings. And then... #io9mastercontrol
@Roklimber: I agree. There needs to be a way to browse what is already being talked about otherwise you just put something out there and hope that someone else puts something out there or checks the same exact tag you did.
You can of course tag all 3 but if you are looking for an exisiting conversation you have to check all three because you don't know which one someone else may have used (or if they thought up something else that you may not have!)
The idea, while hip and cool and Twitterish and all that is just not very practical. This is a prime example of if it ain't broke don't fix it and why reinvent the wheel.
For me, a lot of times what gets me talking in a forum is to see what other people have already written and to read and respond to it, but I am not going to do that if I have to do backflips to find some hidden forums buried somewhere.
I want to see at a glance what is currently the buzz and being talked about. #io9mastercontrol
@Annalee Newitz: I think you misunderstood my question. For example, suppose I want to look for a forum about defying gravity. There hasn't been a post about the show in a long while, so how would I know if there's a forum about it unless I apply a trial-and-error approach? That's not very practical. #io9mastercontrol
@Roklimber: The search box works moderately well. I searched "defyinggravity" and the 2nd story was actually tagged "#defyinggravity." Works even better when filtered by relevance.
I am sure we will have to experiment with it a bit. I excessively hashtagged what i sent into the #tips forum.
@Annalee Newitz: But, like your example about GoofyCon - if I'm mentioning it to get people to come, then it's implied people don't know about it. So the only people who'd look for a GoofyCon forum are those that are already going, which pretty much negates even mentioning it to get more people to show up. #io9mastercontrol
Also, I'm sad that my io9 page has so many picture-less headlines. I love the pictures that accompany the posts, but now on the front page, ten out of eighteen posts have no picture. I can't imagine this really helps traffic for the site.
I want to embrace change, but this change is a a little more difficult than the last one to do so with. #redesign
