The New io9 Commenter System - Explained! |

And the stars are good across the whole Gawker network, right? I can't believe that it can be assumed taht people who make awesome comments on one Gawker blog will make awesome comments on the other Gawker blogs when the content is to different.
Here's hoping someone actually sees this comment, since it will be in grey and buried far far away. Maybe it will even be in red, am I approved? I'm not sure.

If I was in a bad mood, I'd now make a comment belittling you for not skimming the other comments before posting this, but I'm having a good morning.

This is one of the many roads that lead to a 2 tier internet. But of course you wont be able to read this, because I wont be on the first page since I don't have a star... haha

No, I'm not against the right to talk, but if all that someone has to say is "this is the worst possible system" or "this is terrible", then I say shut up and give the people in charge a break.
The people in charge are trying their best to improve the system. It's a new system, it's bound to have problems, bugs, and not to satisfy everyone. But they are trying and that's what matters. Give them some time to make things better for everyone.
If you want to complain, do so, but offer some alternatives rather than just bitch about how terrible things are now.

For those wanting an upgrade, and running Firefox w/ Greasemonkey or Stylish, Lifehacker threw this script up:
* Shows all comments (but still highlights "good" comments)
* Displays all comments in black so the light gray non-featured comments don't make you go blind
* Disables the background-color-change on hover
* Indents comment replies for a little improved nesting

EDIT: It seems to only work at Lifehacker. Damn.
EDIT 2: It does work for the other sites. Under "Manage User Scripts" you can add additional sites.

"who needs to write War and Peace, eh?"
Clearly, judging from some of my posts, I do. But I'm trying to do better. I'll split and write first "War" and then "Peace".

It's also not going to make much of a difference in terms of getting quality posts to appear first.
Starred people can, and sometimes do, post boring comments. I know I do, and now I'm starred. Likewise, non-starred people can, and often do, post interesting comments.
To be honest, I don't see much of a use for giving stars to people. Didn't see it before, and don't see it now.

I normally use Firefox at home, but it times out for me using IE both here and at work!
No commenting on io9 when I should be working on spreadsheets?

"In case the commenting window loses active-window status, clicking anywhere on the page outside of the comment box erases it"
That sounds like a browser-related issue, not a site-related issue. I could be wrong, however.

Actually, I just noticed that too, in Safari 4 on the Mac.
