We don't even own a tv anymore, yet I don't feel like we miss anything we care about. It's a shame media companies haven't caught up. As long as the quality is good I would watch commercials in on-line content.
the networks panic when they dont get the numbers on their channels cause they get paid by companies to run their commercials. i'm willing to say that 5-10 years from now, internet tv will have as many commercials as network does now. 10-15 years from now, DVD's will have commercial breaks as well. you go to the movies today and you have to sit through commercials
then in 50 years, everyone will realize that excessive marketing doesn't make people buy shit, and is a complete waste of money.
if you have a cool product, last time i checked there are thousands of blogs and website that will, in essence, advertise it for free. the catch? marketers don't get to put a bullshit spin on everything - garbage is exposed as such by impartial reviewers.
i would gladly pay $20 a year to never see commercials again. why $20? because that's pretty much the high end of what i spend annually on purchases that are prompted by advertising.
the other $31,980 goes to shit i already know about, already need, and already want.
It's the 'any press is good press' effect. Admittedly, I had no interest in watching it, as what I expected was it treated in a warm bundle of Whedon love. Hearing people not like it made me hunt it out (not on iTunes, but all the same) to find out whether or not the critical meh was justified.
@bookwench: I found it justified. While not a miss, I felt like most of the show was the show telling me "hey, here's something to be interested in!!!"
@Log1c: But all Fox is going to see is that they don't have the numbers watching it in the timeslot, panic, and cancel it. Same thing they're going to do with Terminator, even though the show's real numbers are online.
Fox, for all it's claims of being a huge media outlet, isn't really; it has a few very specific ways of delivering that content, and its executives haven't realized that the Internet is actually a viable way to deliver content as well. Someone's not completely asleep, of course, because we can find the shows online, but their number crunchers obviously don't take the online numbers into their calculations... and POOF, g'bye, a couple of shows that could have made it a couple of seasons otherwise.
@Log1c: Yeah, I watched it on Hulu sunday night, I was too busy drinking friday night to watch TV! Ditto with Tuesdays. And sometimes Thursday's lineup. And of course Saturdays. And the occasional Sunday, especially in nice weather.
