The Feel Of An Explosion At His Back Moves J.J. Abrams To Song

The MTV Movie Awards actually managed to make my little black heart laugh with this musical gem. Host Andy Samberg joined a Neil Diamond-clad Will Ferrell, and sang how, "Cool Guys Don't Look At Explosions." The Joker, Robocop, Iron Man, Wolverine and J.J. Abrams are all there, walking away. J.J. Abrams: The Best Star Trek Easter Eggs Were All In Your Mind

Remember when we all guessed that Star Trek's little-dead-Corvette-scene, with Beastie Boys' "Sabotage", was a poke at William Shatner's refusal to pronounce the word sabotage correctly? Turns out J.J. Abrams isn't that clever. Surprised? Me neither. Find out what else was merely a "happy coincidence" on the Star Trek set. More »

Blame Time Travel For Kirk's Scarred Psyche

By now, you might have noticed that James Tiberius Kirk is, well... kind of a dirtbag in the new Star Trek movie. He trashes a gorgeous Corvette at age 11, and just gets more obnoxious from there on out. He's not just cocky like ShatnerKirk, he's actually irresponsible, where Shatner was sort of uptight. Is it just because he's young and immature? Or is there something else going on, which might actually make for a more interesting movie? Spoilers ahead. More »

Star Trek Trailer Goes Online, Just In Time For The Inevitable Backlash

The HD version of the full-length Star Trek movie is finally online, and it wants you to know two things: Kirk and Spock are troubled youngsters who find their purpose (and each other) on a ship with a big tortilla in front. New Star Trek Movie Is Intentionally Cheesy

As long as we only saw glimpses of the new Star Trek, we could convince ourselves it was going to be cool and sexy. But as soon as the first proper images from J.J. Abrams' movie turned up the other day, the truth came out: it's going to be dorky, retro, cheesy and a little embarrassing. In other words, it's going to be exactly what you'd expect a semi-faithful remake of the 1960s cheesefest, written by the Transformers scribes, to be like. More »

Star Trek Only Boldly Goes For 2 Hours, Thank The Great Bird Of The Galaxy

J.J. Abrams is leading the charge to save us from the over-extended 3 hour movies of late. His Star Trek film will only be two action-packed hours. Abrams told MTV that, “I’m sick of these two hours and forty-five minute movies. Seriously, it’s like I don’t have enough time to stay two hours and forty-five minutes. Shatner Responds to J.J. Abrams and Plots Kirk's Resurrection

Last week, J.J. Abrams told AMC's SciFi Scanner that he had hoped to give William Shatner a cameo in the upcoming Star Trek movie. But, aside from the logistical problem of casting an actor whose character died well over a decade ago, Abrams claims that Shatner refused to appear in a mere cameo role. That's news to Shatner apparently, who posted a video in response to Abrams statements. Shatner says no one ever asked him to appear in the rebooted Trek and, while he's on the subject, explains how Captain Kirk could be resurrected to appear in later, Shatner-starring films. Science Has Gone Mad Because It Lacks A Purpose, Say Fringe Creators

Why is the science in Fringe so out-of-control and scary? Turns out it's because science hasn't had a real goal since the 1960s, according to Fringe writer/producers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Jeff Pinker, who talked to reporters on a conference call today. (I think the designers of the LHC might disagree.) They also answered your most burning question: When will we see a Lost/Fringe crossover? More »

Brendan Fraser was asked to don the super-spandex in the J.J. Abrams' Superman: Flyby film (which was being developed way back in '02- '04). J.J. Abrams To Shake Things Up In Next Picture

J.J. Abrams isn't busy enough already with Lost, Fringe and Star Trek, so he's teaming up with producer David Seltzer, the original Omen scribe, to make a disaster film with Universal that involves an earthquake. (Although it will not be a remake of the 1974 disaster classic of the same title.) With Abrams behind this I expect the disaster to have some mysterious scientific basis that will blow you away. Star Trek Aliens To Be Much Easier This Time Around

We ran into John Cho at the Harold And Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay unicorn booth at Comic-Con. After chatting about how much fun his new Harold and Kumar flick looks, we eked a few Star Trek details out of the new Hikaru Sulu. Cho confirmed that he wrote a letter to the original George Takei and that they met up to talk about Sulu, but wouldn't go into any details at all about his representation of the character. We asked if the skirts were shorter? No comment. Are the ladies greener? No comment. But then Cho laughed and said, "They're easier." Success! Set a course for hot easy aliens.

Cloverfield 2 On Hold Until JJ Can Think Of New Gimmick

Where's that sequel to New York monster movie Cloverfield already? It's on the far back burner, says director Matt Reeves: "We're still kind of toying with what it's going to be and whether or not we're going to find something that will be as exciting for us to make and, hopefully, for an audience to watch. So we'll see. It's really in the baby, baby stages. And right now it's definitely on hold until we come up with what that would be." He wouldn't say whether or not this story was going to be a prequel but did mention that would relate to the original. I'm just glad they're taking their time and trying to do it right, unlike many studios that churn out sequels too soon — Marvel I'm lookin' at you. [Sci-Fi]

Awesome Free Stuff On The Internet

In The Garden Of Iden, Kage Baker's fantastic novel about time-traveling cyborgs who work for the 24th century Company, is available as a free download. Five-year-old Mendoza is about to be tortured to death as a Jew in the Spanish Inquisition, when she's rescued by the Company and turned into a time-traveling operative — but her first assignment is to the 16th century, uncomfortably close to her own time. It's available in PDF, HTML, or Mobi formats. Meanwhile, the new New Yorker has George Saunders' bizarre pitch for a version of Heroes where people only think they have superpowers. (Although I didn't like the ending.) And the pilot for J.J. Abrams' Fringe is available for viewing on Surf The Channel, and shows no signs of being taken down.
