"The Terror" was a cheap quickie even by Corman's standards. He had the sets left of from "The Raven" and "The Haunted Palace." Corman even shot extra movement and transitional scenes featuring Karloff thinking he could edit the footage into a usable film. Jack Hill and Francis Coppola also shot some footage for this one. If I remember correctly, they threw this one in the pot in about a week. #theterror
don't get me wrong, i love terrible movies (especially Corman outings). but this is unwatchable. i have tried a few times over the years and always end up falling asleep. of note: this was Jack's first starring role, and they made it for the sole pourpose of getting as much mileage out of sets they had built for another production. not sure what the other one was off the top of my head, but that was pretty standard Corman practice.
do yourself a favor and watch the Corman produced, Paul Bartel (the one and only) directed- Death Race 2000.
...you even get to see Mary Woronov's boobies! ....again... #theterror
@Bootknife-Jackson: Ohhh... loves me some Death Race 2000. Two words: Hand grenade.
Although as far as the Corman's go I still contest his honestly best movie was Rock and Roll High School. It's fun, witty, awesome music, and had working on it basically some of the best filmmakers/crew of the 80's before their big breaks.
@Sunshineyness: i THINK that was also helmed by Bartel. and i believe Woronov is also in it. (she was also a part of the Warhol Factory in the 60's)
if you want to see the Bartel/Woronov magnum opus, check out Eating Roul. the sci-fi connection you ask, IO9ers? well that would be the fact that it 'introduces' Robert Beltran, Commander Chekoty from Star Trek Voyager. #theterror
BTW, LOVE her hair, dress and makeup... so delightfully 60's and that's exactly how I'd walk around normally if it were socially acceptable. #theterror
"The Terror" is from before Jack could act, and attempts to achieve an air of mystery by moving at a glacial pace and making hardly any sense. Also, it has birds flying around a graveyard, Jack being an arrogant French jerk with a New York accent, Boris Karloff tottering around in his dotage, and Napoleonic-era politics. Oh, and at the end of the movie, pretty much everybody but Jack is dead, so he rides away on his horse like Kip and LaFawnduh riding off at the end of "Napoleon Dynamite".
I'm just amazed MST3K never got after it. #theterror
Footage from this movie was used in Peter Bogdanovich's "Targets," which starred Boris Karloff as an aging horror star. The footage was weaved into the storyline. Good flick about a young sniper.
This is an excellent old movie.I saw it in a drive-in.Sure it is a bad film but it is a wonderful bad movie.Everyone should watch this film.
And Corman did a bunch of other horror films with vincent price that are cool. #theterror
@omnibus_spiritus: I love his bit part in Little Shop... and how even though he's a bit player he's always first billed in any VHS/DVD release of Little Shop ever. #theterror
Judging by these clips, it looks like the plot is padded by quite a bit of circular dialogue, an essential ingredient for a wonderfully bad movie.
"Come with me"
"But the dead!"
"Don't worry about the dead, you're with me"
"But I can't leave til we destroy the dead"
"People in france can fix your batshitness. Say 'the dead' one more time and I'll clock ya" #theterror
@IraeNicole: You ever seen the behind the scenes footage that Kubrik's daughter took on the set of The Shining? It's delightful because it's totally clear she's smitten with Jack Nicholson by the way she oggles him with the camera.
Not that I blame her... (I admit I totally crush on Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) #theterror
I will say that both the soundtracks from Batman Forever and Batman and Robin are QUITE good and I still have them both on cassette tape. The Smashing Pumpkins song (used in the Watchman trailer) is still a damn great song as well as the U2 song from Batman Forever.
But I remember at the time being particularly pissy at the post-Spice Girls crappy faux feminism "girl power" tacked onto Batgirl in B&R. Although a re-watching of Batman Returns (which I used to love dearly) had me cringing at some similar lines Catwoman says at the end.
One day, oh one day... there will be a Catwoman on screen and people will talk about something OTHER than how hot she looked in the suit. Hell, I hope if Nolan does it (please, please) he askews the catsuit and has her wear something sensible if for no other reason than avoiding such cheap remarks.
@Sunshineyness: "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" is one of U2's absolute finest non-album tracks (maybe the finest? I'm too sleepy to work it out, but it's close), and the whole rest of the Batman Forever soundtrack is pretty remarkable, too: PJ Harvey, Method Man, Massive Attack, Sunny Day Real Estate, Mazzy Star -- the songs aren't amazing, but the fact that all these artists were featured together on a comic-book-movie soundtrack is a telling statement about what a great time for music the mid-'90s were.
Bats Returns is a much better movie than the first. The characters seem more human.
Despite all the opprobrium heaped upon B&R, I still maintain that Clooney is the best Bruce Wayne ever. He really fit the part, and I loved his scenes with Alfred.
@downdb: I loved The Shadow (and The Phantom for that matter). I thought The Shadow was really well done. I wouldn't mind that one getting a proper revival.

Seriously. I had a Cheesy Movie Night where everyone had to come and bring an era appropriate food item.
Roger Corman was made for this kind of thing. #theterror
