Serves me right for reading this spoiler extrapolation. I'm hoping there's a reason why PineKirk is young enough to be a Muppet Baby when he takes command of the ship. I'm hoping that reason is due to the untimely death of the ship's actual captain.

No, I get that one. In First Contact they're pursuing the person trying to alter the timeline, and that person does not in fact alter the timeline.
Here the timeline is altered, so everything would immediately change following the alteration, right?

@Islandkiwi: The Borg actually do change the time line but Data explains that the temporal vortex protected them from the changes in the time line--again, magic.

Nero goes back in time *twice*, guys. He tries to kill Kirk by killing his Dad-- he fails. He tries again by killing Kirk at the time of the events of the movie.
The first time he traveled back, the whole Trek timeline changed. Not completely, but enough to make everything in this version of Trek a little "off"-- the Academy years are different, how the crew comes together is different, the relationships/friendships are different.
It will be up to old Spock to note that.
Thanks.

If he is a washout, does that mean he wont take the cheat?

Couldn't Abrams just have rebooted the franchise with the heroic exploits of different ship and crew in TOS time frame? We know from canon that by the first season of TOS there were twelve other Constitution class starships in the fleet.

Well, sometimes. Sometimes we're just here to fling feces and banana peels at the screen, like crazed monkeys.
