This just looks great. Yes its going to be like Marmite..either love it or hate it. But the technical skills behind this will be astounding. They've already hired the tech to Tron Legacy!

Personally, im a big fan of Cameron and I can kind of forgive True Lies (if only for the OTT wing walking scene). This will be fantastic, mesmerising and very enjoyable. Will I like it? Yes!! Will I care what the nay-sayers say? Balls no! Do I care enough to go mental and scream in forums about how much this will fail BEFORE ive even see the film.? Ahem* lets not be silly..of course not!

Lets give this film a chance.

You know what I love about Avatar? I'll tell you what I love about Avatar. Avatar is the new Blu-Ray. Techies and gadget-philes raved about it for a while but the mainstream public couldn't care less. Finally, when people started to get interested in it, they would watch a Blu-Ray video on television and complain that it looked no different. I repeat, the Blu-Ray commercials they saw on their regular television set looked no different.

Of course Avatar isn't wowing us the way it is supposed to right now, we are watching clips of it on a computer screen -- a 2-D computer screen.

Who cares if the story is extremely derivative. We are in the science fiction business people. Derivatives are our bread and butter.

@Dr.Quatermass: Who cares if the story is derivative, lets watch pretty graphics? I'll admit that a lot of scifi is derivative, but I like scifi despite that and feel it's a huge flaw. I watch scifi for those brief moments when it's not. Those that are 100%, like warehouse 13, I don't. It's also why I read more scifi than I watch, certain authors can be counted on to have more original ideas in their stories.

@emerson999: Terminator 2 was derivative of its prequel---literally every main plot point and action scene was a bigger-scale mirror of its precedent---yet it still manages to wow audiences at home 18 years after its release.

T2 is still a perfect example of the beautiful synergy between kick-ass visuals and throat-kicking sci-fi mythology.

I believe Avatar will be the T2 of this generation. Top-notch effects, tried and tested archetypes, next-levelfilm-making. Cameron is the king and you know it.

@Dr.Quatermass: I think a lot of the talk about how Avatar doesn't look as good as it could comes from the idea that it's a James Cameron production. If this film was being screened by some dark horse independent foreign nobody production company, we would all think that the Na'vi MUST be partially CGI'd actors wearing some kind of funky make-up because face it, even 2-D? You can see freaking FACIAL PORES. You can see FLESH TWITCH. The eyes look REAL. That's pretty freaky. Out of anyone else's studio and with less hype than we've been exposed to, the complaining would come after the film has been shown and not before. I truly believe if this film did not come with a heaping dose of James Cameron's massive ego,we could all come out and admit that what we've seen so far looks pretty good. I'm not into CGI and 3D or all that, but the new camera was worth it. There is a significant amount of fine detail that I've never seen outside of a digital matte painting and I'm not gonna deny that.

@NerD: Blattella: I saw both Transformers movies for three reasons:

    - Optimus Prime
    - Bay'splosions
    - Giant Robots fighting

The story? Naw, not at all. But it didn't get in the way of my enjoyment of any of the three things mentioned (Ok, Megan Fox did, I don't need fanservice when two giant robots are gonna duke it out!).

What keeps me from wanting to see Avatar? Simple, it's Dances with Smurfs. It nags at me. I don't want to pay to see these scenes:
    - where Joe main character(MC) starts to identify with the Smurfs.
    - where some Military Brass starts yelling at Joe MC and tells him "It's us or them"
    - where Joe MC tries to bring the Smurfs and humans together for a peace and it goes horribly wrong and the humans kill more smurfs, and wounds and possibly kills smurfette
    - the inevitable final battle where Joe MC fights for smurfette.

Even if only half of those scenes appear in a mangled form, a voice in the back of my head will taunt me with "Dances with Smurfs, It's Dances with Smurfs, you paid to see Dances with Smurfs." endlessly while watching it.

Visuals can't make up that. All the great visuals didn't save Titantic from being an utter bore.

It doesn't matter how good the writing of the story is as long as it doesn't keep me from enjoying the rest of the movie.

    And I hated the Smurfs.

I think I want to see it less than ever, but I will still go if only to keep my geek cred. The whole scene was long and drawn out and still feels like they're trying so hard to impress that I think "Enough already! Story please?"

And as he was running with his tail flapping I kept wondering why he didn't tuck that tail in a bit so it wasn't like the cats in every cartoon that grab the mice by their tails. It also made me wonder how they get their pants on in the morning. I had a hard enough time getting my kids into clothes when they were babies. Can you imagine having to reach back and deal with an unmanageable tail every morning? So glad I'm not blue.

I can see interest in the tail, though. You could grab things while both your hands are already occupied. It's just another appendage - if it's prehensile.

Come on, man, how long does this scene go on?

A five-minute scene with an alien water-tentacle is one thing--no one had ever seen anything like that before.

He's really taking all this time to show off an incremental increase in CGI quality?

Its hard to tell if the CGI is annoyingly apparent in such a lo-def clip, whih can make CGI look more natural than it really seems in the frame b/c the overall quality of the image is downsampled equally.

Won't really know until the big screen. Which I don't mind going to shell out money for - if only to dethrone New Moon from it's #1 position.

And studios still whine that piracy is hurting their profits...
