"Benjamin Purvis, a teenager nominally homeschooled by his loving but distracted mother (an appropriately out-of-it Jennifer Coolidge), spends most of his days writing pulpy science fiction stories."
As much as I enjoy Jemaine Clement, Sam Rockwell, and large-breasted bald women, I can't get past how much I absolutely disliked Napoleon Dynamite. #gentlemenbroncos
@Bongoes: It would be a tossup between a) the lack of characters I liked, believed in, found interesting, or cared about, and b) the utter disinterest I had regarding what was happening or could happen to anyone onscreen.
@Whitworthian: see the thing with movies like that, they ARE MEANT TO BE SEEN WHILE STONED . thats why you didn't like it . its really that simple. you probably didn't like pineapple express either. #gentlemenbroncos
@Whitworthian: I didn't love every second, but yes, PE was good.
I listen to a ton of Stoner Rock and don't smoke pot to enjoy thatt either. #gentlemenbroncos
Its sad to see a movie like this getting beat up critically. Its time for Hollywood critics to be recycled, they have been hopelessly disconnected from audiences for years now.. #gentlemenbroncos
This review totally makes me want to see this movie, but I'm still having a tough time getting past that 14% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. #gentlemenbroncos
@atrus123: I would too, to be honest. I went in with no particular expectations and enjoyed it. It definitely deliberately breaks a lot of storytelling conventions (which I interpreted as silly and a lot of reviewers saw as messy), and it's not Napoleon Dynamite. But I can't get those zany Sam Rockwell bits out of my head, and I'm still chuckling at Jemaine Clement.
@atrus123: I saw it last night and I absolutely loved it… but my friends absolutely hated it. I think it is just one of those films, that has a very specific (and a very small) audience. Those who appreciate it will love it tremendously, and those who don't get it will hate it even more…
I wonder what Uncle Rico would have been like in a SciFi version. If he would have been hustling Tin foil hats or just still been yelling get a job and wishing it was ten years ago. #napoleondynamite
@twophrasebark: Yeah, it's definitely hard to predict.
My great-niece and great-nephew came for a vacation and watched it several times in one week. The first time I watched it, I thought it was stupid and annoying. The second time I watched it, I thought it was great. The third time I watched it, I thought it was so brilliant, I wanted to buy a "Vote for Pedro" t-shirt. #napoleondynamite
@twophrasebark: My sister and I loved it when we saw it in the theatre. My wife took to it the second time around.
The funniest thing was when I was doing gang diversion. I was working at a half way house and the kids pissed me off so I said screw it we're watching one of my movies. A bunch of hard ass crips and Viet gang members all sat there slack jawed, the quietest I'd have ever seen any of them. They didn't laugh, they didn't clap, they just sat there and watched. At the end they didn't even want to do yard time every single one of them wanted to watch it again. #napoleondynamite
@bobert: I'm completely the opposite. I loved it the first time I saw it, but it's rewatch value is close to zero. Every time I rewatch it, it seems to be worse than the last time, and a little part inside of me dies. #napoleondynamite
Back when Napoleon Dynamite first came out, my roommate and I went and watched it in the theater every Friday night. One night, after seeing it for about the tenth time or so, on the walk back to our car, we tossed about ideas for a sequel, wherein Napoleon either goes to college, or joins the Army, or starts his own business, or becomes a movie star, or pimps himself out as a personal bodyguard. It was at that point that we realized that it wasn't the story that was important with Napoleon Dynamite, but the character. Put him in ANY situation and he'd bring the funny.
But yeah, the movie was pretty much lightning in a bottle. I don't know if it could ever be replicated.
@Smeagol92055: The movie Napoleon Dynamite also leverages the, uh, rather unique culture where it was filmed. There are a number of "inside jokes" that most people will miss. #napoleondynamite
@Smeagol92055: I never understood the movie until I moved to a town about twenty miles from where it was filmed. Then I realized it wasn't so much a comedy as a real life portrayal.
@Kishi: I saw ND in college with a friend who was from Idaho and she burst into tears about half way through because it reminded her so much of her hometown. They were NOT homesick tears. #napoleondynamite
@sonicsurge: She hated where she came from. It was kind of a scary experience, I mean, everyone was laughing then she started crying. #napoleondynamite

I still haven't seen it but Netflix says I would give it a 3.8 #napoleondynamite
