Honestly? Maybe this will be for the better. I still am clamoring that Flash Forward should've gone the mini-series route and maybe a successful mini-series will help pave the way for more. I really like the format that a mini-series provides and American TV needs to hop back on the train IMO.
@malo-ji: I think if they had just made the first book as a pilot and then stretched out the action of the rest of the series it would have been fine. But that pilot was an original story vaguely based on the series and it was a hot mess.
The mini-series route is really the only way to go. This way, you can air just a few episodes that no one will watch because they won't advertise it and you already have a built-in reason to end the show. Genius! It's NBC's new preemptive-strike Kings-based initiative. Also, it'll leave the rest of the schedule during the week available for all that delicious Jay Leno comedy. It's comedy at 10:00 people!
@AngryEddy: More like NBC/Universal. Remember, "The 4400" was billed as a miniseries when it first aired on USA, and because of numbers, was able to continue for three additional seasons on the network.
The remake of Battlestar Galactica started with a mini-series, too, but the series wasn't far behind.
Of course, that's cable as opposed to broadcast network television, so like comapring oranges to some other fruit that doesn't really taste as good as oranges.
It just doesn't make sense to do this on a national network.
@Evil Tortie's Mom: R.O.A.C.H.: Thanks for the assist. Kumquats fits that analogy perfectly.
I learned about a new fruit today, too. Ah, Internet, you vast source of information. What will you do for me next?
@SaulLadybug: Exactly what I was gonna say. Although, four hours of TV is, what, two and a half hours of actual footage? Torchwood got a better deal than that.
Hm, I was wondering what was going on with this show. After a very nebulous description as being set after "a big calamity" they dropped a trailer that showed it was, "Earth is shelled from space by alien seed pods that grow into giant bio-organic structures" and thus that it was a big time SF series not some blah drama.
I'm glad that what is going to be aired will at least be a discrete package and not something that just stops midstory.
@zerofritz: Or, in NBC's case, "Scrubbed."
Say what you will about the television show Scrubs last few seasons, but it deserved to go out better than it did on NBC.
@Evil Tortie's Mom: R.O.A.C.H.: Yes, ABC. I liked the series finale they did last year, because it was the closure the show needed. On NBC, the seventh season, Lawrence pleaded for just three more episodes to wrap the show up right, and NBC declined. They aired the last few episodes out of order/continuity and didn't look back.
When the contract came up for renewal, NBC passed, ABC picked up the reins and gave it the final season it needed. There's also talk of the show continuing on ABC without some of the principal actors, but at least they gave the original fans closure before further ruining of the show.
It's one of the few shows, however, I think NBC has mishandled in their lifetime, Freaks and Geeks being another. Better track record than other networks, at least.
@lordshaper: Well, then you simply should write your season with an ending in mind in case you have to use it. Its surely easier to round up your show with a whole season (minus the first two epps) then it is to round it off in just 2 hours.
I don't like this "transmedia storytelling" trend. It's great to have more stories about characters I love, but I draw the line when it becomes mandatory to my understanding of the story.
Star Trek: Countdown was very close to the line. It was a good comic, and made the movie much more logical; but without having read the comic, I would have seen Nero as a flat, two-dimensional villain whose motivations are not properly explained. As far as I'm concerned that's a huge flaw. If you can't tell the complete story without making fans search for the rest of the information, something's wrong.
@The Squid: I agree with you. Every piece of a Transmedia Story must stand on its own. You shouldn't need to have seen any of the other pieces of story to enjoy whatever it is you're checking out.
this is why I liked Death Race, lotta practical stuff. Since I dabble in VFX it's always really apparent and the only time I'm impressed is when it isn't obvious (parts of Iron Man) where I watched the making of and thought to myself "Wow, I didn't know that part was CG".
@JaiMak: I was gonna mention DEATH RACE! I agree with you! A fun blend of practical and CGI. P WS Anderson takes a lot of flack but I'm glad he keeps making movies.

budgets around 13million dollars , even
star trek 6 budget was around 30 million ,
and all those movies had alot of
action ,story ,element .
Cgi and high budget is not needed to
make a great movie , but to show-up at
the box office , you need either massive
unneeded budget or someone you know
who is at the top.
And we get the pointless and plotless movies we seen all -summer , except for a rare few .
