Hmm. Quite a few unmutual comments. Too bad; I'll at least give it the first 2 hours.
Actually, I'm really looking forward to this. I just finished watching (for the first time) the 60's Prisoner on amctv.com, and enjoyed it. I had to get past the 60's cheesetastic-ness of it all, but I found it mysterious, thoughtful and engaging -- my favorite kind of scifi. #theprisoner
@Bigdamnhero: I was thinking about doing it, but I have one question: Does it actually have an end? (I know it got canceled, but I try not to read the ending when people talk so well about old stuff, in case I end up watching it) #theprisoner
@Dirk Anger: Yeah, I stopped myself around episode 10 and thought, "Do I really want to spoil myself for the AMC version, or continue?" I'm glad I finished it, cause I've already seen a lot of shoutouts to the original in the previews, which is cool. I'm sure it'll enhance my enjoyment of the remake.
About the ending: Yes, and no. And yes. And sorta. Maybe think, David Lynch kind of ending?
Let me put it this way. The story is so heavy with allegory and symbolism, and requires a lot of thought from the viewer, that I could give you the ending right now, and it wouldn't really spoil anything for you. I don't understand it, just on one viewing.
Re: it got canceled -- I've read up a little on it... McGoohan's first idea was that he would have enough story/material to make about 7 episodes. The producer wanted 24 (?) -- McGoohan thought that would spread the story too thin, so I think they agreed on 17. And you can kind of tell, too... there's a couple eps at the end, including a Western-themed episode that seems like filler (tho it was cool to see McGoohan do an American accent.) #theprisoner
i refuse to go near this YARM....
the original still is a well loved show in my home and i was there watching it in the 60's too.
this show never needed a stinkin remake #theprisoner
@crashedpc - Haifisch: I couldn't agree with you more. But careful where you point that box. I was originally worried about this, but they have worn me down. I have become one of the Villagers. Give me a number. I am ready for it. #theprisoner
I agree with others who are worried about Caviezel being able to portray the indomitable will of #6 convincingly, the way McGoohan did. I just can't picture him flipping out, shaking his fists furiously and screaming "I am not a number. I am a free man!" with the same emotion. I'll watch though, what else am I gonna do?
@gorehound: Don't be a snob
I am old enough to see The Prisoner when it first ran. That was a long time ago. They may not improve the plots but production has got to be better. In addition McGoohan played Secret Agent the ending of which was kept kind of open as he quit his job as a secret agent at the end. #theprisoner
The minute I saw explosions & a pretty boy in the trailer, I just knew where this was going.
To robinsure and the other Brits complaining that they won't be able to see this; to them I saw, worry not chaps, you're not missing much.
Sorry, big time unmutual on something that in its original form is at least 10x better than explosions, pretty.boys, and whatever names they dig off the old scripts. [Rover, Orange Alert, 'Locals', 'The Tally Ho', need I go on?] #theprisoner
They had my brief interested until I saw the Hollywood explosions in the trailer.
Here we go again. Revive the old series on cable either on demand or a couple weeks before. Cast some pretty boy in the lead. Hollywood explosions. Cue curtain. Profit.
And they hand to wait until the original Number 6 died off before running it. Excellent. For someone.
Not me. Seriously unmutual to this thoroughly, and better flogged in '67 horse.
Actually, thanks AMC for putting 'The Prisoner' on Comcrap on demand for free. I called in sick yesterday and had an 'Unmutual Marathon'. I'd take 17 episodes of the original over 3 as done by Hollywood any day.
I thought the original held up pretty well, but I like the idea of telling the story as a mini-series (like John Adams, Band of Brothers). Even shows like Mad Men are great because they put the budget and talent into a shorter, better told story, instead of milking it out over 22 episodes.
I'm really not liking the look of this. The appearance of the woman in the trailer has me thinking they added a love interest. Bah.
I really don't like how having a single number 2 changed things. By making number 2 be a revolving door it makes it more of a man vs. the system but with number 2 being a single person it makes it more man vs. man which isn't nearly as interesting. #prisoner
