I'm seeing a good deal of people who were disappointed because they liked Pan's Labyrinth but not Hellboy 2.
Unfortunately, people, Pan's Labyrinth was not very good at all. The acting and art direction were really the movie's only saving graces. The actual story itself and the movie as a whole was full of problems. The drama of the story was completely washed out by the constant barrage of brutal imagery from start to finish, to the point where the final scenes were rendered anticlimactic. There were also plot hammers and faux pas, such as the brutal attack on the Captain where for the sake of the plot he is not killed, and later is all but unharmed despite the major wounds inflicted upon him.
I'm sure people remember it to be better than it actually was. I suggest that it be watched again, and I'd be willing to bet that opinions of the film would be more accurate.
@SubhagaBabb: i think this is the crux of the matter. hellboy 2 was much worse than el laberinto del fauno because of the rating restrictions; it's difficult to feel the gravity of a situation when one cannot accurately depict death or brutality.

It was prettier than good, certainly, but I still liked it. I've definitely seen worse comic book movies.

Del Toro + Dark Crystal prequel/sequel = a boy can only wish...

it was a huge disappointment for me...
and I consider myself a del Toro fan
with HB 1 I had the feeling that del Toro had to cut away a lot of stuff to get a PG13 rating to please the producers or something
I hoped, after Pan's Labyrinth, he gained some cred and that we would be seeing a much more mature story with HB 2
that sadly wasn't the case...
