Ok, so that looked very good. Ive never read the book and wonder if its worth reading the book before the film and getting disapointed. Or read the book after the film purley to be selfish so I can enjoy the film first. Then say ..ahhhhh, the book is better. I dont know. Ive heard so many good things about the book that I really should read it sooner rather than latter. Judging by other peoples reactions here its nothing like how the book describes it. And truth be told, aside from the great visuals in the trailer. Is that all the action and suspence we will see and the rest just a 'road' movie. For the record, I am Legend's trailer made it look awesome. It sucked ass.

@CoffinDodger: I'm in the "Great book!" camp, so I'd recommend reading the book first just so you can fully enjoy the book without having the images of the movie dancing in your head.

Then watch the movie almost like it is an entirely new and separate thing.

    At least that's my plan.

You know what I really love about the trailer, even if it makes the film seem like an Independence Day sequel? That it has no Duvall or Pierce, but Garret Dillahunt is in it and he has the world's craziest ponytail.

I began to love / hate him when I realized he played two different characters in two seasons of Deadwood. I didn't realize it was the same actor until 1/3 of the way through the second season.

What the heck was with that familiar roar sound (can't quite recall where I've heard it before) as the dude was thrown/launched about halfway through? That sounded completely out of place.

Also, The Road is one of my favorite movies. I can't wait, although I'm sad they are making it look like it was global climate change that did everything. One of the best parts of the book was never knowing what actually happened. The only hint you ever got was that the father (Viggo's character) had dreams/flashbacks to a bright light, which alluded to a nuke (or series of them) going off, but which could easily have been him going crazy/dreaming.

    Ugh, so excited!

@IndustrialJones: No, that one isn't the Wilhelm scream, it's a different one but equally familiar. But anyone who played Dark Forces knows it as the scream that you got every time you fell off a cliff. It's just a bad, overused sound effect used very poorly in a pretty awful trailer.

though not as bad as the rusty gate sound you hear in every other movie.

also: nuclear war is necessary in the book, as it explains why it's always dark and why you can't grow any more food.

@ThisDudeRufus: I thought it would have been a mass from orbit (planetoid/asteroid) that caused the huge fires sans radiation. Or a supervolcano. Either which displaced enough ash to blot the sun out. The fires would burn everything, much like California wildfires, but on a continental-regional scale. No fire fighting nor national guard could extinguish fires on that scale.

I hoped they would not ruin the adaptation. I loved the book, in that you were dropped into a cataclysm where a father and son had to survive and actually reach their their endgoal, no matter how dire.

Never. I will never see this movie. I still have nightmares about this book and I read it a year ago (oh god, don't go in the basement!). You kids feel free to torture yourselves for two hours, I'll just stay home and watch glorious lens flares on DVD and hope for the Utopian future.

I'm really looking forward to the many op-ed columns and blog posts that will reference The Road: "President Obama/Benjamin Netanyahu/Gordon Brown/Stephenie Meyer/Twyla Tharp/Roger Clemens is like the nameless father/son/cannibal in The Road...." That's never going to get old.

I hated The Road. One of the wrst books I have ever read.
I'm a sucker for apocalyptic stories and tales of people facing insurmountable odds or unthinkable tests of will (see: The Stand, The Ruins, and Blood Meridian), though.

Maybe the movie will be better.
