I see they should be purists about this and go with the original first class from the comic books: Cyclops, The Angel, The Beast, Iceman, and Marvel Girl. The franchise has been so ret-conned, rebooted, spun off, etc. in the comics books and movies that we should get back to basics and show how it was originally done.
@SLL1065: That's the problem with a team title vs. a single character. Everyone has a different idea of who's on the team, from the "original roster" crowd, to the "most popular" crowd, to the "most familiar" crowd, to the "current roster" crowd. Studios tend to lean towards the middle two, as they're the ones that are most likely to draw in audiences.
Go the New Mutants/Gen X route & have original trilogy holdovers like Beast, Colossus, & whoever else wants to cameo as instructors. Banshee & Forge as new staff members. Approach casting like they did for the trilogy, remix & mash up characters from different eras. I like the Cannonball & Northstar ideas but you have to have Cypher. Pixie or Jubilee as the audience's eyes. Make the rival group the Hellfire Club. The decent, awkward & confused X-kids vs. the smug, arrogant & entitled Hellions.
Between this & The Runaways, it could be Marvel's Harry Potter in terms of kids learning to handle their powers.
@MarthaEscatruck: I know right! It's a cash cow waiting to happen! Yeah, Cypher is a must. I'm kind of burned out on Jubilee though. She was just not that exciting, I've always felt. Also, they could set up Cable and Bishop for Age of Apocalypse!
I'm going to go out on a wacky limb here. If the movie title is going to be "X-Men: First CLass" Let's throw caution to the wind. Let's do the the nutty insano thing. I know it sounds absurd but how about Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman and Marvel Girl. I know there is no history or grounds for such an idea but for some reason I think it could work.
@NigelGallows: Actually, I'm thinking if Marvel had the rights to X-Men and not Fox, that's exactly what they'd be doing, for an eventual cameo/cross-over with Iron Man/Avengers.
Being as Fox has the rights. It should be a sequel completely unconnected to X3 if possible, and taking off with Archangel, Psylocke, and a few of these other choices- I would love an appearance my Misato/Armour whatever she's called now.

They can call it X-Men Begins. What? It worked for Batman, didn't it?
