Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Joss Whedon's Dollhouse

Dollhouse will be about "identity, self-determination" and the fact that "free will is both a blessing and a pain in the ass, " says creator Joss Whedon, who helped revolutionize science fiction with his space western Firefly. Also important strands in the show: Joss' view that Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation "is a great TV character," and the hotness of star Eliza Dushku. Joss spilled tons of details on the Dollhouse pilot, plus the first script review just popped up online. Spoilers, as they say, ahead. More »

Jane Espenson Talks About Writing for Firefly and Battlestar -- and Gives a Little Secret Cylon Backstory

Jane Espenson is the only person to have written for both Firefly and Battlestar Galactica, the two best TV space operas of the past decade. She wrote Firefly's "Shindig" and at least three episodes so far for BSG. Back when Battlestar first launched, many people felt it was trying to copy the grittier look and handheld camera action of Firefly, so we decided to ask Espenson what she thought. Find out what she thinks the differences between the shows are — and how Cylons share memories — in our spoiler-free interview. More »

Dollhouse Filled With New Dolls, Old (Battle)Stars

Fans of Battlestar Galactica's Tahmoh Penikett - the overly-sensitive toaster-lover Helo - shouldn't worry about him disappearing from their scifi screens when that show's final episodes air. He's one of a number of actors who've just been announced for Joss Whedon's new Dollhouse series, set to premiere in the fall on Fox. More »

Joss Whedon's internet musical about a sad supervillain, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, has only just finished shooting. But it already has its own fansite, covering every scrap of information. So far, we've gleaned that Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris) has a "rebuttal song" with an eerie melody, and Rick Partlow plays someone named Mayor Hankins. [DoctorHorrible.net]

Monsters, Browncoats Invade This Week's Comic Stories

Okay, so this week's comics don't have Sarah Michelle Gellar doing the [SPOILER] with a hot young [SPOILER], but that doesn't mean Joss Whedon fans need to be sad. In fact, it's time for River Tam fans to rejoice. Plus, the decline and fall of Frankenstein's Monster is something, right...? Yeah, I know. You'd rather have Buffster in the buff. But take a look at tomorrow's haul anyway. You just may be surprised. More »

What Franchise Should Joss Whedon Take Over?

We're still sad that we'll never get to see Joss Whedon's Wonder Woman movie. After all, he's created some of the most memorable science fiction universes, including the space-western Firefly and his forthcoming programmable-amnesiac show Dollhouse. We'd still like to see Joss put his auteur-mojo to work on someone else's universe. Which longstanding science fiction universe would you most love to see Joss writing, directing and composing the theme song for? More »

Joss Whedon Wants to Dance

Joss Whedon did double duty of the Y: The Last Man party in Los Angeles on Friday, serving not only as keynote speaker, but also as one of the Big Draws for the evening. io9 at the 'Y: The Last Man' Party in Los Angeles

Last night in Los Angeles, MySpace Comic Books along with Meltdown Comics on Sunset Boulevard held a fundraising "meet the stars" benefit for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund in honor of the final issue of Y: The Last Man. Co-creators Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra were feted by the likes of Joss Whedon, Grant Morrison, Mark Waid, Drew Goddard, and an honest-to-god live monkey. Although the party was sponsored by Vertigo Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Image Comics, Top Cow Productions, and Monster, Mark Waid said he would have funded the CBLDF for one year if they would have given the monkey a knife and let it run amok. Check out the list below for highlights, including the pornographic origins of Y, and what the secret connection is between Doctor Who and the series. Needless to say, if you haven't read the series, there be spoilers ahead. More »

Joss Whedon Hates Weird Science

That Buffy episode where Warren makes a robot girlfriend, who then goes berzerk? "I Was Made To Love You?" Turns out it's Joss Whedon's way of critiquing Weird Science, a movie he loathes. That's just one of the insights that Joss dropped in a discussion with group of L.A. geeks for the GeeksOn podcast. He also revealed some new details about his upcoming projects. More »

Comics Bash Celebrates the Destruction of Mankind

Proving that there is little in the world hotter than the combination of nerds, MySpace and Joss Whedon, tickets for the MySpace-sponsored, comic-commemorating Y: The Last Party sold out within hours of the event being announced yesterday. February's event celebrates the final issue of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's post-male-apocalyptic fantasy Y: The Last Man, due to appear in stores at the end of this month. It takes place in popular LA comic store Meltdown, and Whedon - a collaborator on the Buffy Season 8 comic - will give a "keynote address," cementing his position as the Steve Jobs of geekdom. io9 Talks To The Newest Terminator

Summer Glau spent the hours before last night's premiere of her new series, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, hanging out with fans and posing for pictures at the Los Angeles Comic Book and SciFi Convention. We were able to snag a few minutes with the newest addition to the Terminator factory line before she was whisked away in a frenzy of marketing and fandom. In the new show, Glau plays the good Terminator, sent to protect John Connor. You can catch the second hour of the two-part premiere tonight — an hour that in our opinion kicks a lot more butt. Find out more about Summer, and hear a rumor about the all-singing, all-dancing mystery version of Firefly, in our interview. More »
