The best thing about the movie version of Blindness is how much it makes you appreciate the transcendent novel by Jose Saramago. The book takes a potentially hackneyed story — everyone goes blind, except for one woman — and turns it into a jarring look at how anything can become normal. At its best, the movie, directed by Fernando Meirelles (City Of God), conveys a lot of the book's squalor and warmth.
