Damn. I heard only vauge things about this, but I didn't realize it was an alternate history / sci fi deal. If only I had seen that in the ads. Just checked out the first ep last night on Hulu and it is fascinating. Crap.
@TheXenos_C2F: That is exactly the problem. The ads for the show were literally NOTHING but a logo flash. They didn't even TRY. If I hadn't read about the show in a "Fall Preview" issue of TV guide I wouldn't have known it was even interesting. There are so many ways they could have spun it, including painting it as a "royal drama" in a "world like our own."
I was really planning to give Kings a chance when heard it was alternate history. However, during the first episode it became glaringly obvious that it was simply a retelling of the Biblical story of King David (as related, at least in part, in the books of...wait for it..."Kings"), and by the end, I didn't see any point in continuing to watch. It wasn't even Narnia-style religious allegory--just ham-fisted transliteration.
Just because a show is set in a non-existent country doesn't make it Sci-Fi.
I apologize to anyone that finds this offensive, but I found the concept of a "King of the United States" so freaking ridiculous and offensive that there was no way I was ever going to give that show a chance.
@KryptonZero: The show had nothing to do with the United States. It took place in an imagined city.
That being said, it was awful. Highbrow? Sophisticated? LOL. The writing sucked, the acting really sucked, and the production value was far greater than the story required. McShane's dialogue was obviously modeled after his brilliant performance on Deadwood, but it was forced and lacked any of the refined power Milch created. Kings didn't fail because people didn't "get it", it failed because it fucking stunk. Hire a better casting director next time.
@FaceMelter: Actually it was implied in several promos [www.youtube.com]
On top of that some of the promos would have an announcer say something along the lines of "What would it be like it the United States were run by a king? Find out on "kings" this Sunday at 8:00" unfortunately I could not find a clip on youtube.
@KryptonZero: Well, the clip you posted doesn't imply that the show takes place in the United States. In fact, quite the opposite given the flag waving and CGI city at the end.
Completely agree with your assessment of the Kings situation. From the executive decisions we've seen coming from these idiots lately, (besides V possibly), it's long past due for some management change.
It's absurd that they didn't simply segment potential audiences then craft differing promos emphasizing the rich themes (war, family, spiritual...) that Kings had in spades.
The fault's completely on their promo/marketing department: NBC's should be fired (not that they'll be needed after it becomes a 24/7 Jay Leno channel, anyway).
i dont even count kings as sci fi though. its more fantasy/alegory than anything, and once they stopped focusing on the war with Gath it was very soap operaish.
kings failed because they didnt market it properly. and because it was a show you couldn't just jump into. had you not seen the last episode you missed plot points, in today's ADD culture you really need to hook people early with a serielized show.
What I hate about NBC is that they never give shows a fucking chance. They, in my opinion, always keep the shit shows and throw the good ones.
I never watched a promo for Kings, and NBC was the only channel I ever watched.
I get mad a NBC for just fucking with my life, any show I ever like is taken away from me!
The last thing TV needs is another fucking reality show about RVs .
@Jose Maya: the problem isnt just with NBC. network television is the problem. had this show been on say showtime it would have probably become successful. but as a network needs to sell commercial time and wants the heaviest saturation of viewers possible for the smallest investment they dont stand a chance.
Kings only began to make sense in the last couple weeks. That is the fault of the writers for failing to establish their premise for 3/4 of the season. For a long time, it looked like the whole point of the show was to allow women multiple opportunities to ogle Ian McShane.
@pjcamp: eh? God wants David to be King, That was the crown of butterflies in the first episode and up until the last few eps was the least interesting storyline but we always knew roughly where it was goin.
@ShobhitaAntiphus: seriously how could Farscape get canceled and heroes stay on the air? can we get a creative change up? go hire Ben and Claudia for Heroes and kill off you know... genrerally the entire cast.
NBC is closer to giving up on quality television than giving up on just sci-fi. In their defense, when the top shows on TV are American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, America's Got Talent and the rest - can you blame the network? Most of their audience gave up on good television quite a while ago.
The early advertising for Kings was actually very interesting... and completely misrepresented the show's premise. It looked like it was going to be about some kind of alternate universe where the United States was a monarchy. I thought that sounded like a good idea for a book or a movie, but not a television show. When I heard that it was actually a modern day retelling of the story of King David, I was pretty surprised.
@GreyHammer: Exactly the reason I never watched it, it pissed me off to think that someone out there thought it was a good idea to shit on all the people who gave their lives in creating a nation ruled by it's people and specifically not by a monarchy.
I'd rather see a TV show about Benjamen Franklin and John Adams then see someone's make believe world where the U.S. is ruled by a king.
When I heard the story was actually about the story of King David, that turned me off even more. Did they even think about who their target audience was? An anti-US, Religious based TV show? Why not just make a show that's pro-abortion and aim it at people who own guns? That'll go over just as well.
Kings failed because NBC gave it a default death slot, and because NBC execs couldn't understand what "slow boiler" means, and to think that this was the network that gave us Seinfeld and The Office, both of which needed more than one season to find an audience. That, and NBC owns SyFylis, which still couldn't find its head from its ass beyond BSG
Network TV and sci-fi just don't mix. Sure, we get the occasional hit (Lost, Heroes) but mostly we get Virtuality and Sarah Connor, great shows which weren't given a chance to grow.
Then we have garbage like Defying Gravity and that shitty miniseries about the moon hitting Earth... Don't get me started, please.
@RexMaximus: I was really hoping that Virtuality was gonna go beyond the TV movie it ended up being. Fox should have at least given them a six episode run for the summer, seen what the interest was and gone from there.
I think a lot of network TV, like you said, doesn't mix. I think most of them, NBC especially, think it belongs on Syfy(like the SyFylis you did there), and I can't say that I blame them. Network TV is a glut of crime and medical drama's, and if you look at my DVR during the Fall and Spring runs, that's most of what it is.
I think at this point SyFy is at the point where it should have two channels, one dedicated to new and original shows, and another for the older SciFi/Fantasy shows of the 80's and 90's. I think SyFy would benefit as a channel if it had current shows of nothing but Science Fiction. TSCC, Virtuality, Eureka, Stargate, and other shows that won't get a fair shake on the networks.
I'm pumped for Day One but it's isn't going to make it on NBC, but they should move it straight to SyFy where the ratings aren't quite as important and they own the channel so they don't really have to pay syndication(I don't think). They could keep their investment in the show and give it a chance(better) to grow. They should have snatched up Sarah Connor and flipped it to SciFi, same thing with Firefly when it was on, Jericho, the list could go on for days.
It's unfortunate that none of the above will ever take place because the SCIENCE FICTION channel would rather play WW FUCKING F and EC FUCKING W! Sorry, couldn't contain it.
I didn't watch Kings because the idea of a King in the USA sounded stupid. I don't care about royalty and I don't care about family dramas. It might have been the greatest show ever made but the premise didn't appeal to me at all.
@PostMarque: I'm willing to admit that my impression of the show may be totally off base but if it is then that is entirely due to the terrible advertising of the show. Since the show is dead now I'm much less likely to go watch it.
@jccalhoun: create another firefly scenario... dont be such a consumer. choose what you like, dont let media companies do it for you.
now you can watch it for your own reason, which is because i told you to.
@CaptainSnarky: It was advertised that way for a long time. Sure, you can't judge a book by it's cover but when the cover says "This book is a piece of shit" it tends to influence your opinion if you like it or not.
