The closest I have ever been to owning the Ecto-1 was my car horn junior year of high school. It was the first six notes of the Ghostbusters theme. I was sooo proud. But my tiny hick town just thought I was retarded. So, as punishment, I played those six notes as often as my little fanboy heart could handle. #scienceficitonvehicles
Monstrosity, my tuchus. Just cause a guy dares to be a little different and NOT pull a dick move like that ripoff artist Barris...
And, hey... YOU try finding a 59 Caddy Miller Meteor Combo that hasn't been rusted all to hell. There's a distinct lack of Holy Grails around. Not every 59 should be re-purposed into an Ecto, much as I love that car.
Besides, Boomer's got one of the more creative replicas. I've seen some bad Ectos out there.... *shudders* #scienceficitonvehicles
@Cliff_Roswell: Calling it a "replica" is his mistake.
I wouldn't mind if he called it an "homage" or "inspired-by" Ecto-1. (I have only heard it referenced as a "replica," if it is in fact not referenced this way by the builder then I might retract my statement.) Near as I can tell he is touring it with a bunch of replicars, and as such is a monstrosity among them. I do not besmirch his enthusiasm though. #scienceficitonvehicles
The 2K started as a replica. Far as I can tell, Boomer's no longer referring to it as such. Among the GB Community, it's known as the Bannedwagon.
And as for the Ecto-Outback, lovingly called the "Ecto-1K(inda)," here's Boomer's exact words: "1- It is an Ectomobile replica, NOT a Cadillac replica." (source: [www.gbfans.com] )
Secondly, look at the Kerezman Ecto and the Sean "Venkman71" Bishop Ecto Lauren posted. Then define "replica." If by your definition, "replica" means a 100% screen-accurate work of art with all the little doodads and greeblies and whatnot, then both Kerezman and Bishop fail, as they both have 59 Caddies of a different make. Compare the 59 MM from the first "Ghostbusters" with the Kerezman and Bishop and you'll see massive differences.
If by "replica" you mean an "item that resembles the original enough to pass a glancing inspection," then you can't nit-pick Boomer's vehicle choices. You bring anyone who's seen GB only once and show them that and they will say that it's the "Ghostbusters car."
Define "replica" and then go from there. Don't automatically dismiss years of hard work from a single guy as "it's not 100% so it's a monstrosity."
And I'll say it again. A 1959 Cadillac is the Holy Grail of vehicles, be it a convertible, hardtop, hearse or ambulance. Gentlemen, with each passing year-- hell, with each passing DAY, these cars are becoming harder and harder to find. And if someone does find a Caddy hearse/ambulance from anywhere from '57 to the early '90s, their first instinct is to convert the vehicle into an Ecto. In these trying times, any random kid who loves GB will go out of their way to procure a 59 in some way and --without an inkling of vehicle conversion in their head-- set about turning it into an Ecto and tear the beautiful machine apart.
So, guess what? Sacrifices have to be made. Alternatives have to be found. Caddy is a rare breed of car, and you have to go with what works, especially on a budget.
You cannot call shit on a guy who has monetary limitations.
And if you really want to see what Boomer's up against, check out the competition: [www.gbfans.com]
Besides, it's not as bad as Barris touting his "replica" as being the one used in the actual film. Or his claims that he personally built the 1966 Batmobile (bullshit) or the DeLorean used in the "Back to the Future" films (also utter garbage).
Honestly, I also don't see anyone giving a hard time to the guy who made an A-Wing out of his Acura. #scienceficitonvehicles
@Cliff_Roswell: Consider me further educated on the subject, Seems I caught the ire of an insider. :) (All your links require login also.)
Besides, it's not as bad as Barris touting his "replica" as being the one used in the actual film. AGREED on this.
My comment was not meant to disparage his efforts. Just that in the context of it all, I didn't consider it a replica (hence the "so-called" portion.) It is a great fan homage.
A-Wing Acura?? I don't see it in the post, or have even heard of it. I know only of the "H" wing del Sol... and those are a bit different. Car:car vs. "spaceship":car
Maybe we need a post on great fan-made (non-replica) cars.
Someday I will have a garage where I will work on making my own KITT or DeLorean. I also someday will hopefully have the money to do this. I also hope by then I will have the remotest amount of talent and know how when it comes to cars and making things to pull it off.
As I think about it, it's becoming clear this will never happen so I should probably keep my VW and stick to my Hot Wheels. damn. #scienceficitonvehicles
@Ruthless, If you let me: Yep! The legs don't move, but it's mounted on a wheeled platform with a small motor. Someone sits under it and drives. He does need a couple of spotters to make sure that he's going in the right direction. #scienceficitonvehicles
It has always been my dream to somehow, someway own a replica Ecto-1. Sadly, it's one of those dreams that will remain completely out of my grasp. #scienceficitonvehicles
Well, that's simple - pull out the screen and controller board, hack it to do something useful, and install an ashtray in the gaping hole in the dash. #aida
