And at the movie's panel, the director revealed Samuel L. Jackson is playing a killer robot.

In the movie's panel, director David Bowers revealed that Samuel L. Jackson will be playing a robot named Zog, a mean junkyard robot, who has a small but pivotal role in the film. In general, Bowers said the new movie sticks very close to the original and features a "very emotional" origin story. Astro Boy may have been created in the 1950s, but he's very modern for his time.

So Bell plays Cora, a new character who's not in the original series, who becomes a foil for Astro Boy. She's suspicious of him at first, but eventually they form a great friendship. Cora is "sassy and opinionated," and has a very hard exterior but a soft interior.

Apparently the film includes the classic lines "Status of bodily fluids: Sudden release." and "I've got machine guns in my butt."

In the roundtable interviews after the panel, we asked Bell and Astro Boy actor Freddie Highmore about the Pinocchio factor. Why are so many robot stories about robots that want to be human, and how do you bring something new to that story.

Highmore says:

I think there is the basis in Pinocchio [is] the fact that you've got a kid who is human but wants to be accepted as a normal kid. But there's a barrier stopping him from doing so. Pinocchio is made of wood and in Astro Boy he's a robot. I think the reason that theme seems to reoccur is because we all have something different about us, and that's why we can identify with Astro Boy as well. We've all got something that makes us stick out. We try to — not completely smother it — but use it in a way that makes us able to fit in with our surroundings, at the same time. We all want to be accepted as just another normal human being, in a group of human beings, in society, or in Astro Boy's case, in a family.

Adds Bell:

I think it's also a lot about not looking at what makes you different, but what makes you unique. [Laughs] Soundbite, deal with it.

<![CDATA[Chuck vs. The Third Season]]> Fans who saved Chuck for another season are now wondering what lies ahead for the denizens of the Buy More. Tight-lipped producers are hinting at revealing some secrets at San Diego Comic-Con, but here's what we want to hear.

After the game-changing events of last season's finale, fans that campaigned so hard to save their beloved geek idol fear that the show is selling out to Subway, that Chuck's new superpowers will rob him of his everyman appeal, and worst of all that we may have seen the last of the Buy More and the Nerd Herd.

Listen up, Chuck; I may just be able to save you. Just stay in the car.

The zesty tang of corporate whoredom was all over last season. Fans who cried "sellout!" when they heard about the show's dirty dealings with Subway obviously were not paying attention for the past two seasons. Chuck has always been the television-show equivalent of a NASCAR driver's jacket, and we've loved the show all the more for it. iPhones and foot–long subs have always served to bring us into Chuck's reality, not out of it. In a culture as logo-laden as our own, product placement merely gives the impression that these could be our lives, and we too may one day be tapped to be super spies.

When we last left our hero, he had upgraded to Intersect 2.0, the scene itself rife with subliminal and not-so-subliminal advertising. Did anyone else feel like they were watching a giant Hulu ad? After the upgrade, Chuck is new and improved, and now comes with Kung Fu grip. What other goodies does Chuck's new cerebral software come with? The possibilities are endless. But with great power comes great responsibility; not just for Chuck, but for co-creators Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedek not to fall into the Heroes trap of giving human protagonists superpowers and thereby removing all traces of humanity. Hopefully, Chuck's new powers will serve to trip him up in more hilarious and endearing ways, while allowing him to still save the day.

With Chuck and Morgan's departure from the Buy More, it's questionable how much we'll be seeing of the motley crew of Green shirts in the third season. While the antics of Jeffster have lost some of their appeal, I fear for the show if it departs completely from the land of discount electronics and fast computer repair. The show's sweet and simple premise, namely Chuck's perilous tango between his real-world dead-end job and the fantastical world of espionage and intrigue, is what keeps us watching.

It'll take more than following these guidelines to save Bartowski. He'll need help. We saw last season that the ratings of the show took a quantum leap with the arrival of several guest stars, from Dominic Monaghan to Scott Bakula and Chevy Chase. I propose that the best way to make the most of Chuck's second chance is to give us even more star power to fuel the third season. Here are a few suggestions:

Kristen Bell
Bell's comic timing is perfect for this show. We're all a little tired of the Sarah & Chuck sub-plot, and no cliché is more satisfying than a third party coming between our ambivalent lovers. As a clumsy and perky Buy More employee, Kristen Bell would not only look great in a green polo shirt, but would also steal the show and hopefully Chuck's heart. Half-way through the season Bell would be revealed to be a CIA agent working undercover, and could flex her Veronica Mars spy-girl muscles while stealing secrets and doing improbable stunts.

Alec Baldwin
Both Bell and Baldwin have most recently been working for NBC, so they wouldn't have to go very far for to spend some quality time with the network's pet project. Alec Baldwin would be brilliant as Agent Casey's West Point / CIA mentor, who returns to head up a delicate case and makes Casey jealous when his mentor takes a shine to Chuck.

Neil Patrick Harris
We all love NPH. He could appear to ward off the dreaded mid-season slump, save the ratings and re-invigorate the show. NPH would play a computer-genius / entrepreneur who has designed the world's newest AI search engine. The CIA hires NPH to design a special Intersect search feature, so that Chuck can access all those Government secrets on command.

Jonathan Pryce
We saw last season with Chevy Chase's character that putting a face to FULCRUM and having an identifiable super villain made the show that much more enjoyable. This time around, we need a new big bad, and I propose Jonathan Pryce. Pryce proved himself a worthy adversary as the Bond villain in Tomorrow Never Dies, has endless desk-jockey geek-cred thanks to Brazil, and no one wears a condescending smirk quite the same way.

It's also time for new blood at the Buy More. I volunteer Napoleon Dynamite's Tina Majorino, Freaks&Geeks' Samm Levine, and Nick & Norah's Aaron Yoo to be some new scruffy Nerd Herders.

<![CDATA[Actors Who Get Fandom]]> The best part of falling for a show is discovering that the actors in it are just as shamelessly fannish as you are. Lo and behold, there are a lot more actor geeks than you think!

It's difficult to separate an actor from her character, especially when the acting is of high caliber. Of course, actors deserve to have private lives just like all other creative professionals, and if some of them don't read the Lord of the Rings trilogy every year (like Dominic Monaghan), well, that's just who they are. But it's a special gift from actor to fandom when the people who play beloved heroes turn out to be more than a little like the heroes themselves. They might not fight caped evil in their daily lives, but these eight actors possess that crucial bit of understanding that keeps them from phoning in their roles — and convinces their admirers that they're worth every jaw-drop and swoon.

Kristen Bell
After three years as teenaged noir super-sleuth Veronica Mars, Kristen Bell had to move on to something different — and she chose Heroes. Having watched the show since day one, Bell told the minds behind the show that she was a huge fan; the rest, as you know, is history. She's living proof that part of being a great actress is having a deep personal investment in the story you're being paid to tell. Audiences appreciate the hell out of that. And in a fantastic interview with the A.V. Club, Bell further showed her respect for her fans:

The bottom line is, everyone's a loser in their own right. Here's why I like geek culture: People like what they like because they like it. They're not trying to fit into any mainstream likes or dislikes. You want to dress up like a Star Wars character and go to Comic-Con? Do it, if that's what makes you happy. People might look at you as super-weird, but if that's your obsession, go for it.

Damn straight, Kristen! And I expect to see you in our next cosplay round-up.

Wil Wheaton
The man you know as Wesley Crusher just might be the poster boy for actors-in-fandom. Whether or not you like his Star Trek character, you have to admit that his subsequent work as a blogger has made the lives of many geeks, nerds, and fans very happy. He's written extensively and thoughtfully on his experiences in the world of Star Trek and in real life, producing three books: Dancing Barefoot, Just a Geek, and The Happiest Days of Our Lives. He currently blogs at Wil Wheaton dot Net in Exile.

David Tennant
Nobody had to explain Gallifreyan customs to David Tennant when he took the role of the Tenth Doctor on BBC's Doctor Who. He'd already been watching the program for years. In fact, he is a self-described "Doctor Who junkie" and once cherished a Tom Baker action figure. Now an action figure himself, Tennant took us through the production history of the show in a memorable episode of Doctor Who Confidential entitled "Do You Remember the First Time?" — and by the way, it turns out that pretty much everyone on the team these days was a childhood fan.

Felicia Day
You may know her as Dr. Horrible's lost love Penny or a Potential Slayer from Sunnydale, but it turns out that Felicia Day's geekiest — and awesomest — work yet is the creation of the online web series The Guild. Her tribute to gamers is adorable, hilarious, and subtitled in Chinese, Japanese, Italian, French, and German. Yeah, she's one of us.

Nathan Fillion
One of the hallmarks of devoted sci-fi fandom is allowing a fantastic story to become your reality. So Nathan Fillion, who played Captain Malcolm Reynolds on Firefly, endeared himself to me forever when he started making posts to internet fan forums and signing them "The Cap'n." The Serenity star is my kind of man: He devoured comics as a child, holds frequent Halo tournaments as an adult, and has this to say about his experience as the leading man of a sci-fi western (from Firefly: The Official Companion):

I put on my costume in my trailer and took one last look in the mirror. They called me to the set and I remember coming right from my trailer to inside the door of the set. When you walked into the studio, the ship was just to your left with the big open cargo bay door looking at ya. I remember walking up the cargo bay door for the first time in costume. I believe it was David Boyd, our director of photography, who turned and saw me walking up and turned back around to the crew and said, "Captain on deck." Some people clapped and it was kind of neat. It was a reception I will remember always.

David Duchovny
Nothing says commitment like writing two episodes of the show you star in, directing three others, and contributing to the story of five more. He may have left The X-Files a bit too early for some of our tastes, but Duchovny and creator Chris Carter were very much in cahoots as far as this celebration of unexplained phenomena is concerned — and that demands some respect. As Duchovny told the Los Angeles Times, it's an honor to be part of sci-fi culture:

The X-Files was said to be the first Internet show. We had chat rooms and fan sites and all that. Look, I'm usually five or six years behind whatever is hip. So it was around 2000 that I started doing e-mail and finally started understanding what all that was about. ... My initial response — and I still hold this to be true — is that it takes the place of some of the functions of a church in a small town: A place where people come together, ostensibly to worship something. But really what's happening is you’re forming a community. It's less about what you're worshiping and more about, "We have these interests in common." Someone has a sick aunt and suddenly it's about that, raising money to help her or sharing resources to make her life easier. That's what it was about with The X-Files on the Internet.

Ben Browder
Ben Browder's starred in the much-loved Australian-American series Farscape and American-Canadian series Stargate SG-1. Other actors in his position might bitch about being pegged as a sci-fi actor, but not Browder; he was heavily invested in both series, and seemed to have as much fun making them as people did watching them. He snagged a story credit for SG-1 and wrote two episodes of Farscape. As you can tell from the panel recording below, Browder learned his stuff while doing it: he says, "when people tell you that some long arc show which is five years in making is planned in every detail from the beginning, they are full of it!"

Simon Pegg
Simon Pegg will be Scotty in the J.J. Abrams Star Trek film, and is one of the creators and stars of the tongue-in-cheek sitcom Spaced — he plays a sci-fi enthusiast and aspiring comic book writer. He certainly brings a lot of talent to both sides of the screen, and when he guest-starred in Doctor Who, Pegg told the BBC:

Doctor Who was a big part of my childhood ... I'd got into Doctor Who just before Jon Pertwee regenerated into Tom Baker, and as a kid I never remember the special effects being as primitive as they were. It scared the hell out of me but I loved it. I particularly recall monsters like the Sontarans, who had very strange heads; the giant insects in "The Ark in Space" and in one episode, Julian Glover tearing his face off to become this one-eyed creature.

He's speaking, of course, of alien menace Scaroth, who manipulated human history for his own ends in the serial "City of Death." If that brilliantly campy special effect impressed Pegg, he had to have been totally immersed in the story, and that is true sci-fi cred any day.

Salutes all around for these glorious nerdy thespians! Now — who'd I miss?

Thanks to tipsters Heather, Sarah, Ellen, and Lily!

<![CDATA[Veronica Mars Joins Astro Boy's Stellar Cast]]> Our favorite teen detective, Kristen "Veronica Mars" Bell, joins the A-list cast of Imagi's Astro Boy. Bell will play the female lead, joining Nicolas Cage as De. Tenma and Nathan Lane as HamEgg. Astro Boy follows the construction of a friendly robot boy who is eventually forced to fight crime in a not-so-friendly, futuristic Metro City. This isn't Bell's first voice work: She's been narrating Gossip Girl for a full season. [Variety]

<![CDATA[Meet The Stars Of The Next Knight?]]> The Dark Knight's sequel will feature Catwoman, the Riddler and Harley Quinn, as played by Marion Cotillard, David Tennant and Kristen Bell - or, at least, that's the dream of one particular artist who's come up with posters for his version of Chris Nolan's third Batman movie. Click through to see full-size images.

The images are the work of Australian artist Josh McMahon, who came up with the images after chickening out of posting the above image as an April Fool's "leaked" Dark Knight still. We're not convinced with the somewhat stubbly Catwoman, but if Nolan wants to take advice about Tennant and Bell, we'd be very happy Batfans indeed.

We also have some new hints about next year's Stargate: Atlantis. Oh, and Ally Sheedy has a secret she needs your help keeping. Click through for spoilers.

 • Heroes may or may not feature Kristen Bell's Elle when it returns next fall. She's not signed for season three, but the producers are talking to her about coming back for an "arc" during the season. [Ask Ausiello]
 • Fans snooping around during the filming of the Doctor Who fourth season finale report that not only is Rose back, but so is her dad, her mom and her (ex?) boyfriend Mickey. That's in addition to Captain Jack, Martha, Donna, Sarah Jane and maybe the Doctor's (fake) daughter. [Tardis_Crossing]
 • But other fans suggest that maybe Captain Jack will meet Rose, but the Doctor won't? [Time And Chips]
 • And finally, some fans speculate (hope?) that the Doctor and Rose will settle down to raise the Doctor's daughter and start populating a new Gallifrey. It'll be all cozy! [SunnyTyler001]
 • Spoilers for some upcoming Stargate: Atlantis episodes: in the fourth season finale, Sheppard has gotten sent over 40,000 years into the future, but a significantly aged McKay appears via hologram and explains he has a plan to send Sheppard back, and undo a future that went horribly wrong. In season five episode three, Ronon gets reunited with his friend Tyre, who's broken free from his brainwashing. But the Wraith capture Ronon, so the Atlantis team has to face the possibility that the Wraith could turn Ronon into another Wraith worshipper. During the course of the Wraith torture, Ronon loses his signature dreadlocks. [Gateworld]
 • On the Kyle XY season finale airing March 10, Ally Sheedy asks Kyle to keep her identity a secret. If I met Ally Sheedy, I would have to blab to everyone I know, and most of the people I didn't. Actually, Ally's big secret is the fact that her character is the mother of Jessi XX, Kyle's female counterpart. Oh, and there's prom angst. [Turkey Whisperer]
