I work in biomedical research. And yes, researchers tend to make their own equipment - a lot. Supplies and equipment for biomedical research tend to be really expensive, much more so than similar objects would cost for non-research use.

So yes, for equipment that we can theoretically make/fix ourselves, we try to. There are some fantastic stories floating around every lab about the guy who tried to make his own PCR machine/centrifuge/etc and ended up either exploding/setting on fire/shooting through the roof whatever he was working on at the time.

My wife, who used to work with lab rats, always tells people that it was just quicker and easier to snap their necks with the handle of a pair of scissors than to use gas, though I guess this could be a close second.

@Garrison Dean: R.O.A.C.H.: I used to work with a neurology group. They preferred the guillotine--easier to store just the heads, more fit in the freezer.

Some days I am really glad I'm not a grad. student anymore...

you could always freeze them, they fall asleep and pass, that is what some petstores do with kittens

I actually used that rat guillotine when I worked in a lab during college. Very quick and painless...for me
