I'm amazed it took this long for the footage to show up.
The footage and the panel gave me serious hope for the sequel. Mickey Roarke looked great. I know some of us were worried.
rental outlets might care that a very tiny portion of the people that didn't see this in theaters who also download frequently will see the blu-ray or dvd release without paying them a couple bucks for it. i doubt it will stop anyone that was planning to buy the dvd or blu-ray from doing so, however, since it's not like they don't already know what they're getting.
People actually *liked* Watchmen, and would want to actually buy it, to ensure the best possible quality plus bonus features.
Further, we've all already seen it in theaters; the big reason behind the Wolverine leak was that no one knew exactly what it was going to be like and wanted to find out...now it doesn't matter as much.
Frankly the only two movies that DIDN'T flop critically this summer were Star Trek and if you go back to spring, Watchmen.
Went up as a group with my scifi club to watch it in the upper west side, then went to a chinese restaurant post-movie to discuss Nite Owl 2's sloppy chinese food eating. What a time that was...
Agreed: by all accounts ([www.boxofficemojo.com]) it's been $50M in profit internationally, which is hardly a failure. did they want/expect more? oh sure: but the real money is in DVD sales, which is a license to print cash.
$182,735,282 on a budget of $130 million (+ god only know how much in promotion, possibly as much as $50 million(more?)) does NOT push this film into 'profit' - the studio(s) get only about 50% of the BO = $90 million.
@goldfarb: Agreed. And studios are pretty notorious about fudging the international numbers, so I would put the total figure closer to even with the production budget (which was likely underreported). With a HUGE marketing push and untold $$ in cast and crew fees, this is one is a pretty big loser.
Right on! No doubt Hugh Jackman slipped this poor young man some roofies and tricked him in to working for his movie with the promise of a percentage. Oh cruel fate!
JUSTICE NOW! hee hee hee.
If you are going to make a fake video like this spend a few minutes and write a more sensible script. It's like someone handed him the ski mask and said, "Dude, uh, just make something up. It'll sound more realer and stuff, y'know?"
I'll say fake - if only because the ski mask doesn't really hide this guys identity at all...
and as for the motivation - I work in VFX and this kind of thinking is around, but only by a very small percentage of very young and very naive people...the reality of the film industry is just like any other...'fair' has nothing to do with it.
Fake, I'm sure... but the one I thing I am certain about is that when they do catch the guy (gal?), the studios will make certain that the punishment is beyond anything we can imagine. They have to set an example right now or this thing will happen again sooner than later.
I really wouldn't want to be that person right now.
