    When I was a kid, Godzilla was so scary because I would imagine this huge monster squashing people, and you couldn't out run it. It was just too big.

    The 1998 crap fest Godzilla comes out, Godzilla is smaller and they evacuate New York.

    ...I went into that film to see the squishing of people. That's scary as hell. 1998 Godzilla had none of that.

    @Twisk: 1998 movie had Matthew Brocerick and Jean Reno goofing around, which was good. And Hank Azaria. And Maria Pitillo. And Harry Shearer. I wish there had been two separate movies - one with that cast, and one with Godzilla. And no Roland Emmerich.

    Don't dis the Roland Emmerich version of Godzilla. I liked it and so did my kids. It didn't have any similarities to the Japanese monster other than the name, no sorry the name is different isn't, but as a stand alone movie it was pretty good.

    Emmerich's Godzilla wasn't a monster- It was an overgrown iguana. Which is one of many reasons that it failed.

    Godzilla has to be a monster.

    I seriously don't understand what's appealing about the old 'guy-in-a-suit' Godzilla. I've got a friend that loves it but it just seems ridiculous to me.

    @senatormayer: Campy spin offs aside, the orginal with Raymond Burr was actually pretty well constructed storywise and the effects were cutting edge for the time. I give it an iguanadon Thumb Up

    @Shaftoe: Ugh.
    The "original" of which you speak is a version that cuts about 20 minutes of footage and every anti-nuclear message, and adds an entire character to the actual original.

    @The Squid: Although, interestingly enough, the US cut *adds* dialogue about how the victims are suffering from radiation burns that wasn't in the original version, thus *increasing* the Gojiro=Da Bomb connection.

    Mysterious are the ways of the Localized Edit, no?

    As long as this is the REAL Godzilla, as in a guy in a suit, the news of this movie being in the works is going to be the best birthday present I've gotten so far.

    @Kpibca: You don't need a guy in a suit to have the authentic feel as long as you understand what Gojira is.

    This is all cg Gojira, but it looks so right! This isn't from a Gojira movie though. Shame.

    @Pessimipposaurus: True, true, that was an amazing scene and a great example of how to get it done right. I stand corrected, but I don't know what the odds are that they'll go that route with the film. For all we know he'll be a mutated Gila Monster.

    Help me out here. Is "Godzilla: Final Wars" the movie where a member of the JDF (or the EDF) says that the monster in America could not have been Godzilla?

    @Golem100: An obvious knockoff Emmerich version is one of the monsters the aliens sicc on Big G, who toasts him in like a Tokyo second. The head alien mutters something along the lines of, "Shoulda never used that stupid fish-eater."

    My vote is for Hedorah (Smog Monster) as first opponent. It could work well with the environmental theme.

    Pollution=Hedorah

    America already got its monster movie: Cloverfield. I like Godzilla strictly for what it is: as the embodiment of an entire culture's destruction fetish and fears.

    I'd love to forget the Matthew Borderick version -- that just wasn't Godzilla at all. If they want to do a Hollywood version, why change it so much that you lose all the fun of the original and all the details of what made it great?
