Has this Lensman thing been in development for a while? First I've heard of it. Never been a huge fan of JMS but I love the books. The first olde-tyme space opera I ever read...even before the Carter of Mars and Carson of Venus books by Burroughs. I would love to see this on the big screen...but the JMS factor makes me nervous. They are going to cut them down to almost nothing.
@Matthias: IIRC, you could reduce the entire first novel to backstory. I'm just wondering what they're going to do with the author's fascist eugenics plotline.
it's encouraging to see a writter that's a huge fan of the original attached to do a remake. so often the 'i'm a huge fan of the original' is just something the lead says to play up the marketing hype a la the day the earth stood still.
if the live action version can pull off a sequence that's half as mournful and expressive as the slow-motion and flashback sequences of the series i'll consider it a smashing success.
@GayRobotsRUS: Sadly, I am 95%+ certain that either (a) the character will be eliminated totally, (b) will be portrayed but not by a dog, or (c) if it is portrayed by a dog it will not be portrayed by a Welsh corgi.
@tetracycloide: plus 6 months learning how to move and act plus some plastic surgery to make him look not like Keanu then I'll accept him. Right now it's almost as bad as the idea of Leonardo in Akira.
@tetracycloide: Y'know, for once I agree with this; Keanu has a long history of, well, being Keanu in everything he's in, but hey, this time, that could actually work to his advantage. Spike seems like a pretty good fit for him.
Although I agree, he needs to work on that smirk. He scared me in Matrix: Reloaded when he did it.
@Smeagol92055: R.O.A.C.H.: the fight sequences, i think, are what has me most worried about keanu. sure he has extensive experience with fight coriagraphy from the matrix but this would be different; in this case he has to fight like bruce lee which is a feat oft' attempted but rarely accomplished, even by professionals.
@Pope John Peeps II: using jet jun do and fighting 'as if' they're bruce lee are two every different things. an entire industry was erected of stuntmen pretending to be bruce lee (brucesploitation) in films after his death and none were ever able to truly recreate his timing and fluidity of motion on or off the screen. really the only big name successes to come out of it were those that created their own martial and screen persona.
ultimately it's not going to make or break a cowboy bebop film either way since the movie's success is not going to come down to the accurate portrayal of one of the characters fighting styles but i'm a fan so i nit pick.
@tetracycloide: Yeah, but lots of those stuntmen were pretty shitty. I remember seeing a guy called Bruce Li, for example, who was terrible. And Lee wasn't really superhuman. He was exceptionally skilled, but he wasn't unique.
There were a lot of people who could recreate what Lee did on screen. And even more today. Jet Li for example, had more pure skill in his prime than Lee did. And Tony Jaa does outrageously beautiful things with fight choreography. Donnie Yen too could probably do a great Bruce Lee on screen.
Just think about it. Jason Scott Lee learned how to ape Bruce Lee pretty perfectly without a lifetime of martial arts training. To portray something on screen isn't the same as having to learn it for real.

If they have Ein, he'll probably just be a regular dog, not a datadog and backup food source.

Hope Keanu has to leave and the project either collapses or they find someone else. I'd rather have no live-action Bebop than have Keanu ruin it.

What is the this feeling I'm getting?
No, it's not disgust. It's not revulsion. It's not annoyance. It almost feels like, uh, interest...
