This is YARM or maybe YASRI my new anocronym for yet another stupid remake idea !!!!
You guys know I will never go near this krap and I will boycott Hollyowood as I am doing with all these remakes.I watched the original film with its original theatrical audio track courtesy of someone on the internet.I watched this with a few close friends who love horror stuff and both of them loved this film.I will state that I thought it was a decent and original take on a Vampire story. To bad that we can't think up films like this in the USA unless we ripoff some foreign film.
A Tale of Two Sisters is also a great foreign film we have in our videostore library.
I think I've said this before but I'll say it again. I don't understand the outrage or the adulation for the original. It wasn't a bad film, but it was hardly the work of transcendent genius that everyone pretends it was. A Tale of Two Sisters was a far better film, yet its horrid American remake barely got a mention, and certainly didn't provoke the backlash that Let Me In already has.
@JRD_2: Indeed, I don't get the adulation either. I was anxious to see this after reading rave after rave, and then found it not only boring but simple. Maybe the American treatment might actually be a good thing.
@JRD_2: Well I really enjoyed the film, it was brave enough to actually have what we all wanted to happen in the end. Also, t'was a fresh take on the vampire tale, and there was pretty interesting character developement, leaving you wondering what will happen in the future, will the boy end up like her original helper? or something more, etc.. Is it really so surprising that people would be outraged at this remake? First of all, the film only just came out! Second, a lot of people really liked this film, and my own personal opinion is that if you can't enjoy a film because its foreign you have no business watching that film in the first place. I'm sure the Two Sisters film would get just as much backlash, but it hasn't had the exposure of this remake.
This whole thing is ludicrous. Laughably ludicrous. 'Let Me In' because Americans are too stupid to understand 'Let The Right One In?' Elias being re-imagined as Abigail? Seriously? I mean, SERIOUSLY?
@Occula: As an American, I respect your opinion on this movie because I adored the first one.
Also as an American, I am of the opinion that you can stick your feelings about Americans up your ass. I love Bollywood. I do not go on Bollywood film forums and complain that the latest Bollywood ripoff is horrible because they won't get the nuance correct, and that somehow this is a cultural issue.
@NerD: R.O.A.C.H.: but it's just as bad. remaking movies because a whole people doesn't want to burden themselves with bothering about anything that doesn't come from whithin their borders is simply egocentric and stubborn. you wouldn't repaint the mona lisa so she sits infront of mt. rushmore or the taj mahal. you wouldn't rewrite "war and peace" to make it play during the american civil war or the indian struggle for independance and you shouldn't, by no means remake ans water down a movie just because watching the original would have to make some people face there is a world beyond the borders of their nation.
@FrankN.Stein: I disagree. A good or even a bad remake can do a great deal to encourage people to go and visit the original.
I'm going to be devil's advocate here and say that this movie can be transferred to the US very easily. After all, there are sections of the US that match the town where this was made. They've made one great casting choice so far. And while I am not pleased with the idea of a remake I am mostly going to reserve judgment.
If it is well written, and well acted, this can make a lovely bookend. Will it be better than the original? That is where opinion comes in. I seriously doubt it. I will say that this movie has the difficult task of competing with the original. The one thing it wont do is replace it.
Case in point: I love La Femme Nikita; I cannot remember the remake's name. There are people who still swear by the series.
Also, I saw a Bollywood film called Kaante. It's a remake of Resevior Dogs, and Heat. There is a third movie they cribbed from that escapes me. Did I get offended in any way because of the obviously hamfisted sausage making in this film? No, mostly because I don't expect greatness.
@Occula: I have absolutely no idea why you think re-naming the flick has anything to do with intelligence. They will likely rename to avoid confusion when searching for it or because the marketing people think it's catchier. This is the same BS I heard when Amelie got it's title shortened to just "Amelie" in the states because the distribute thought that "The Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulain" would be a mouthfull. Titles have very little to do with intelligence.
Also, dude, seriously nothing makes a person sound more snobbish and, frankly, unintelligent than calling Americans stupid.
@FrankN.Stein: From my experience the whole "foreign language movies aren't successful cause Americans are too dumb/ ignorant" mentality is sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
The reason that nobody watches those movies when they're released here is cause everyone already assumes nobody wants to watch them beforehand; so they only get released in a handful of cities (usually within a 60 mile radius of Hollywood and NYC) with zero to minimal promotional push (even less than American indie films), and still only get played on maybe 1 or 2 screens for about a week.
Then when the numbers come in and show that the movie got buried, everyone just throws up their hands and go "ha ha Americans hate this shit".
Hell, I live an hr away from Hollywood which is obviously one of the most cinema-savy places in the world, and I still had no idea that Let the Right One In was playing for a limited engagement at the Arclight in Hollywood until a week after it stopped screening.
When I went to see Oldboy, a movie which had considerable more advertisement power thanks to Tarentino's endorsement, I had to drive to a tiny 5 screen cinema with no parking lot.
Also I remember going to the Mann Chinese theater this year to watch a movie and being pleasantly surprised that they were also showing JCVD. I thought to myself "Holy shit I didn't even know they were releasing it here yet! Awesome! But I'll have to catch it next week..."
A week later I tried to buy a ticket and found out it wasn't showing anymore (I don't know if it's shitty release was because of or despite it starring Jean Claude Van Dam).
@NerD: R.O.A.C.H.: I do believe that foreign films being remade in the USA are because or slightly because most Americans will not sit thru subtitles. It is maybe like the above commenter stated and I am an American and I also work for 15 years in a videostore.Yes most Americans are kind of stupid when it comes to foreign films.I know because of my videostore work and see what they want to rent.
@gorehound: I actually have no qualms with people who "don't like subtitles" and find the attitude that not liking them makes you stupid really cruel. I have a good friend with bad dyslexia who often can't read as fast as they come out on the screen and can't follow the movie. Her disability most certainly does NOT make her stupid or closed off culturally but rarely makes the effort to watch foreign films because of this.
I also have another friend who's very cinematic inclined who want watch subtitled movies because he feels movies are a visual medium and feels something is lost in the movie if you are reading it and not fully watching it. I don't completely agree with him but I respect his point none-the-less.
I still watch foreign subtitled films- I'm just saying that not wanting to watch subtitled films does not automatically equate with stupidity or a closed off nature.
@NerD: R.O.A.C.H.: I must admit that I have at times painted you with that brush, but I try not to. Usually it's just a knee jerk reaction of frustration, and you lash out with a "Stupid silly Americans not watching our superior non-American cinema and then doing a sub-par version of their own!"
Anyone else guilty?
The only way to change it, as I see it, is to keep tabs on your local (or semi-local) smaller venues where the smaller good films show.
Hopefully you guys have some around. I, sadly, don't.
And I'm not even supposed to be here today, for that matter.
I have a huge collection of foreign films and I agree that subtitles are fucking distracting.
Sometimes I have to rewind bits of a movie cause I missed some of the actual movie happening above it (which is why I really wish everyone would adopt a 'speech bubble' style that was used in the remake of Man on Fire of Nightwatch).
Unfortunately the only other option is dubbing which is distracting in its own way and can ruin an entire movie if done poorly.
With subtitles you can't really screw it up (unless it's the Let the Right One In dvd apparently), and subtitles actually can also make a movie appear to be better than it actually is.
@Illogic: Yeah, I came off as brusque. That usually happens when I log onto one of my favorite sites and someone has insulted me without my even being here.
My girlfriend is just about the smartest person I have ever met. She's a scary lawyer at a scary law firm, and she reads all day long. One of the things she doesn't really want to do when she goes to relax is read. It's a comprimise between the two of us when we rent films.
I forced her to read the subtitles on "Let The Right One In, and in turn, she'll force us to watched the dubbed version of "Supercop"
So, calling me stupid, that's fine, but calling "Americans" stupid insults my girlfriend. Not good.
@NerD: Blattella: Darling, apparently the nuance of my sarcasm was too nuanced for you. By asking if Americans are too stupid to get a subtle title, I'm indicating that the STUDIO DOING THE REMAKE thinks we are dumb. Not that we are dumb. Check your Strunk & White. Although, you must admit, loads of Americans ARE dumb, if you want to get down to brass tacks.
@Sunshineyness: Oy vey! Do I have to go around and explain repeatedly what I mean? Read my sentence more carefully, please, before telling me I hate Americans.
How old is Let the right one in?? A year, 3 tops!! I bet someones already thinkg about an Avatar remake or a Surragates rehash. Bloody hell, and I was worried about Short Circuit getting the Hollywood revamp!
Not because it's YARM, nor is it ruining my childhood or is it a crime against humanity; it may even end up being good, but honestly, I don't care.
I am simply taking this stance because someone should have used some coin to actually promote and place this fine work of art where American audiences could see it instead of trying to remake it.
@LuluTuditanus: The hype is about the original, which I'm sad to say would be pretty hard to see even when it did it's limited release. There are some DVDs out, but check what people said about the subtitles in case you get one. Some are pretty horrid...
So how many ideas do we rob from everyone else . seriously , their trying to do a death note remake ,a host remake and this one . These movies are perfect without us idiots dipping are hollywood fingers into it .
@crashedpc - unrein: Thanks for expressing a shared sentiment. If you don't like something, don't do anything to give it money. Don't watch it in theaters, don't watch it on TV, don't do anything to show any kind of support. Enough people doing that and it might suddenly not be worth the companies time and resources to make all the shit that spills out of Hollywood and New York studios.
@crashedpc - unrein: She's not a bad actress. Check her out in (500) Days of Summer, for example. That said, pardon the pun but I don't think she has the fangs for it. If we have to have a remake of Let the Right One In, at least give us an actress that looks more like Eli. Lena Leandersson's dark wavy hair and dark eyes worked well for the film. She was both cute and frightening.
