    Wonder how long it takes for the power company to show up and bill the property owner for all the siphoned electricity. I've heard of it happening before, when someone built a barn or shed near high-tension power lines and put spools of romex that were adjusted to supply standard household voltage to his house. They noticed an unexplained drop in power on those lines, figured out where it was happening, and then discovered _why_ it was happening. It's a known phenomenon, and it's still legally their power until you pay for it.

    @Purple Dave: Didn't Mythbusters

    (almost) bust that? You have to get awfully close and would be very obvious with a huge structure so close to the lines.

    Anyone worried about all the EMFs juicing up our bodies? In addition to electricity, we have cell phones and wifi coursing through our bodies every minute. Looking forward to 30 years from now when everyone realizes how bad it is. Children of Men world here we come!

    Ok, we've got scientists harnessing power from nano-particles in our clothing and everything else under the sun, but we haven't figure out a way to harvest all this extra power floating around under the power lines?

    @paqman:

    It isn't "extra", and yes, we know how to harvest it.

    Midwest ranchers have been setting up antennas to leech this power from lines crossing their land for years, and the courts have deemed it legal - it's effectively "broadcast" and therefore free to take. The power companies generally have to buy it back, if you draw enough...

    @cletar: The stuff inside those tubes will give you cancer. I had a friend, used to eat the glass from those bulbs in the circus. He died.

    From Cancer?

    @shaithis: Mythbusters tried it, and the amount of power able to be recovered is minimal. I'm guessing since this is English, the lines carry more juice for their 240v power.

    @VideoOrItDidn'tHappen_GitEmSteveDave: it's also stealing. once the power recovered becomes useful it also becomes measureable on the transmission lines.
