If we're throwing recommendations into the ring, I'm gonna cast one for Irredeemable. It's low priced, and one of the best Superman amalgams since Mr. Majestic. But the story itself is so much deeper than Superman knockoff. Pick up the first issue, you'll know the t-shirts were right. Mark Waid Is Evil, indeed. #5comicsyoushouldbereading
@manimatr0n: Copy that. Irredeemable is a great book. However, had my LCBS owner not have recommended it I would never have heard of it. #5comicsyoushouldbereading
Based on the strong suggestion of this site, I went to my local Borders yesterday, camped out with a couple of lattes (their seasonal drinks suck donkey), and knocked out the first two trades.
The initial storyline was damned good, and highly emotional. The second wasn't nearly as interesting, at least on a character-driven emotional level (there was imagination 'a plenty), but you could see where the groundwork was laid to get the intended storyline moving.
I'm a bit torn on the idea of dragging out the set-up in such a lengthy fashion. On one hand that second trade seemed to go nowhere, but on the other it established possibility that can take the story ANYWHERE.
Then I started in on the two most recent FABLES trades. I wonder if Willingham knew he was on to pure gold when he pushed that idea on DC? All the wonder of AKIKO and the drama of STRAY BULLETS, the two series I currently miss the most.... #lockekey
@thexpert: While your sarcasm is noted, the honest answer is "yes." After being burned on so many blind purchases by so many supposedly great comics and movies, I now always sample the wares before I drop coin. Inter-library loan is a great way to sample works, and you can find most trades available with only a small wait time. When/if the economy ever improves I might again be as impulsive with my money as I was in my youth, but it today's age, that money gets spent on things I want to OWN and re-read, and not just sample. #lockekey
I love Locke & Key. I actually have that on my site's list of top 5 comics you should be reading as well. It's probably one of the comics I most look forward too every month or so. #5comicsyoushouldbereading
May I suggest Chew?
Chew centers around Tony Chu is a police detective who is "cibopathic," meaning he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. [en.wikipedia.org]) #5comicsyoushouldbereading
Thanks for giving Locke &Key the credit it deserves. It's a fantastic, creepy story, and the second volume was one of the trippiest thing's I've read in a while.
I've been thinking of picking up Hill's fiction now. Is Heart-Shaped Box worth reading? #5comicsyoushouldbereading
What was the name of that comic you guys were talking up awhile ago, the one with the girl who gets hit with fragments of an exploded military armor suit, that turns her into this witchblade knockoff? Was looking for it the other day, but couldn't remember the name of it for the life of me. #5comicsyoushouldbereading
One not mentioned but worth checking out if you want a fun story about a girl who whenever she falls asleep she finds herself in an extremely realistic American Revolution setting that may or may not be real. It's a little girly but I am absoulutely in love with The Dreamer. It started as a web comic here:
@Sunshineyness: At first I thought you were going to mention "Dreamless", a web comic set in Hawaii and Japan just before 12/7/1941. An American girl and a Japanese boy who, when asleep, see through the eyes of the one who is awake.
@Sunshineyness: Just checked out "The Dreamer" on the web and added a shortcut to it in my web comics folder. Thanks for the tip. #5comicsyoushouldbereading
Ooh, King City looks and reads AMAZING. I might just pick it up, and I don't really read comics other than Calvin & Hobbes.. #5comicsyoushouldbereading
