Let's face it, the movies are aimed at 2 different demographics, one is larger than the other, one sells more. Simple.
In that Venn Diagram I happen to fall in the inclusion area and have copies of both movies, and enjoy each for what it is.
Getting outraged or rabid about TDK not becoming the #1 selling movie of all time says more about your ability to become outraged or rabid than anything else. But it is fun to sit back and watch the comments fly.

They're jist movies, fercryingoutloud.
They make chick flicks and geek flicks for the same reason they make red cars and gray cars: they sell to different groups.
I am the night, Fernando.

He spreads his wings and floats in the air like a vulture circling it's prey. His infra-red goggles sprint down the slits in his mask, giving him a fearful advantage on the criminals below. He reaches down to his utility belt and flips open a small panel to reveal a series of buttons: 'stop' 'play' 'forward' 'reverse'.....The Bat pressed play with the same excitement as when he first went to the theatre with his parents as a boy.
The criminals weren't sure of it, but from Batman's cowl a faint sound could be heard over the crushing of there bones....
"You are the Dancing Queen, young and sweet, only seventeen.
Dancing Queen, feel the beat from the tambourine.
You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life.
See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the Dancing Queen."
"I am the night."

Mamma Mia! had something Batman couldn't offer: pure fun. There's no shame in it and no reason to compare the two; fun wasn't what The Dark Knight was going for, but it's what the public wanted more as Christmas loomed in these depressing times.
History shows that's generally how these things work.

There's nothing wrong with musicals in general, but there's also nothing fun about ABBA.

I love musicals. Hell, I just watched The Sound Of Music for the 145th time.
I also like ABBA.
But Mamma Mia was crap. Awful casting and a clumsy plot that works on the stage, but not for a movie.

Seriously, it is not for everyone -- few films are -- but who cares? It isn't some personal insult that films exist that you don't like. If it were, I'd have to start duels with half of Hollywood.
And unlike apparently most of you guys, I can tell from the reviews and previews if I'm going to like something (not whether it's well-reviewed or good or bad but whether *I* will enjoy it).
I mean, can't you guys do that? You always seem to know months and years in advance based on sketchy rumors that something's going to suck...?
And what I do this is not see movies that don't seem like my kind of thing. Amazing how much money, time, and boredom I save that way.

You don't have to apologize for having not an ounce of critical reasoning. It's the season, so you're forgiven.

Wait...you publicly admit to being an ABBA fan...and you expect that to lend weight to your opinion on TDK? Wow.

I watched both Mamma Mia and TDK, and I'm not surprised that MM is selling so well. MM has better replay value than TDK, and it appeals to a more general crowd. If you're not a Batman fan you're not likely to be interested in TDK. There is also the case of MM being a musical - superhero movies are a dime a dozen these days, musicals are rare and instill a sense of nostalgia in the older crowds.

TDK did so well precisely because Nolan figured out how to make a comic book movie with general appeal, not something that caters to the hardest of the hardcore. TDK was hailed as a great _film_, when comic book origins are usually taken as an immediate sign that it's going to have great fan-appeal, but ultimately land firmly in popcorn-flick territory.
And, it's not that being a fan of ABBA disqualifies you from having or being able to express an opinion on a movie like TDK. It just means that you shouldn't expect anyone to hear it without chuckling under their breath as they walk away.

Don't you have Marley's ghost to contend with, McMillan?
Sheesh.

We suck when it comes to pop culture. Keep in mind, this is the country that, as a majority (that I proudly proclaim I'm not a part of) loves shows like Britain's Got Talent and X Factor (basically American Idol for all age groups to participate).

Oh, and Graeme? Thanks a whole fucking hell of a lot for opening that door with this post.

Mamma Mia and all of this other CRAP that has come out makes me sick - TDK was 1744% better than Mamma Mia, Sex and the City, Titanic and any other of those chick flicks out there. And you know it to be true.

Dark Knights's great, Joker's the man, need a gift for your wife
Desperately pick that flick, because of the ABBA scenes
Friday night and TV shows all blow
Looking for a movie to show
Where they play the right music, getting in the swing
You come in looking like a king
Better you than another guy
Night is young and the music's high
With a bit of soft music, everything is fine
You're in the mood for a "dance"
And when you get the chance...
You are the horny guy, nookie night, waiting patiently
Horny guy, feeling pain from the Abba songs
You can't dance, you won't sing, just spending time with your wife
See that flick, endure those scenes, as you're the horny guy

I think Mr. Garrison put it best when he said, "You go to hell and you die!"
Seriously, don't ever do anything like that again. You know, unless it's based on a superhero like Spiderman or Cyclops.
