Branagh is making this? That worries me. I recall back in the early 90's when I heard he was going to make Frankenstein with ROBERT FREAKING DE NIRO as the Monster. I figured it simply could not fail given that critical mass of talent. It did. I was also excited to see what Ang Lee could do with the Hulk. We know how that turned out too. This does not bode well for Thor.
@frankystainz: I totally see your concern. KB's Frankenstein and Lee's Hulk weren't critical successes by any means. But they weren't -bad- or lazy filmmaking, IMO. Branagh seems like a swell fella nowadays (after that mid-90s career that smelled a little pompous). Even DiNiro has evolved (lightened up, Fearless Leader?). Also, Lee personally loved his own little Hulk; he took the thing pretty seriously. I foresee something very much unexpected, since Branagh has a reputation for "actorly craftsmanship".
That said, this Thor could be smashing the box office with a Ham On A Stick, instead of weaponized Moljnir.
@JohnnyZito: Yeah Jake Olson, a.k.a. the Thor alter ego I explained 4 hours ago. (No offense taken though, I rarely read all the comments before commenting myself; just being smart-alec-y.)
This all could be a smokescreen and probably is. Marvel is known for it's slipping of supposed "spoilers." All I want is a good story and don't screw up all the Norse Mythology. At least Kenneth B is directing so I have hope.
@Alchemistmerlin: I don't want them to try to appeal to the masses and make this into something stupid.Examples: Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, Venom in SP3, Daredevil,Electra,Punisher? These are attempts to appeal to a broad market and they failed horribly. If you write a GOOD script with a good adventure story you will succeed. Imo
@Alchemistmerlin: I know about this. But, imo I really hate when Marvel, D.C. etc. decides to change a longtime character (I.E. Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos, Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.) which has been around since the 60's, into something "cool" just for the sake of "cool." If the original character has worked for 45+ years why change it? The only reason they used Samuel L. Jackson is because the Ultimates was one of the hot series of the last few years. (Ultimates 3 sucked by the way. 1 & 2 was way better.)
Actually, the answer is potentially clear if you're familiar with Dan Jurgens' run on Thor. Thor had a new human alter ego named Jake Olson who was an EMT. Jane Foster, who had become a full doctor, was a supporting cast member. So they could be using that alter ego, which could easily be turned into a medical student instead of just an EMT and Jane Foster would still be around.
And let's face it: Jake Olson is a cooler secret identity for a Norse God of Thunder than Dr. Donald Blake.
@Lassus: Puh-lease. It's all right there. Jake Olson sounds the greatest wingman you'll ever need. He'll get you back to your apartment after the party's over, even if he's drunker than you. He'll help you cheat in your med school courses. He'll even drive you to the hospital himself if you cut yourself on the bottle opener!
Doctor Donald Blake? That just sounds like some douchey guy with leather elbow patches on his tweed jacket. "Oooo. I'm the god of thunder. And my first name rhymes with twaddled"
@Lassus: TheGreat&PowerfulTurtle makes good points, but it's not the reason I was shooting for. Which is, you know, Jake OLSON actually sounds like someone related to Norse mythology, if only by half. Dr. Donald Blake sounds like someone related to a whole lot of American white people, and doesn't bring Norse gods to my mind in the least. But your mileage may vary.

So you want a movie that has nothing to do with Thor the super hero?

Samuel L. Jackson was Nick Fury because Ultimate Nick Fury was modeled after Samuel L. Jackson.
