The rules of the contest state that the controls should be made from "odds and ends from around the house" and look like The Doctor built it himself.
We know the old TARDIS gets heavily damaged, so presumably what we'll see is Matt Smith's repair job (bodged together from bits and bobs nicked from Amy's house) before triggering the self-repair mechanism which resets it to the more traditional white one they're supposed to be using for the rest of season 5.
I love Dr Who, but isn't the TARDIS mostly irrelevant? It seems mostly ancillary to the main story. It's kind of how the Enterprise was to Star Trek--a staging ground for the main action. In fact, most of the action in Dr Who is made possible by, but does not actually take place on, the TARDIS.
I'm not really sure what point I'm making here. Sorry. :)
@Shai_Hulud: A decent number of the older, pre-reboot episodes took place almost entirely, or mostly, inside the TARDIS. The interior of the TARDIS spans a huge area, such that they have even had long chase scenes on it. Every Doctor from the old series spent a significant amount of time fixing and redesigning the TARDIS.
From some Moffat interviews I've read, I get the impression that Moffat is a huge Dr. Who fanboy, and seems to have a wonderfully nostalgic spot in his heart for the old stuff. I have no doubt that we'll see more of the TARDIS interior and TARDIS tinkering that was common pre-reboot, along with some other modern revisions of older Doctor tendencies/idiosyncrasies.
I'm actually very entertained to see what comes from this, and how it gets integrated into the show.
@Shai_Hulud:
That's OK, you're amongst friends here. Your comment is correct that the TARDIS is mostly irrelevant to the story in Dr. Who, except for the occasional episode.
However, its external look is iconic, and its internal look changes fairly regularly, so it is interesting that they are looking for input from children.
Also, you get an extra point for not referring to the TARDIS as a "MacGuffin".
@The Ultimate Tea Cup: I personally think it's a bit stretching it to call a vehicle a "MacGuffin". I'm not sure that term is even being used properly anymore. But, what do I know.
I'm also pretty jazzed to see what they'll do with the TARDIS. It reminds me that I haven't been keeping up with Dr Who enough lately.
@Shai_Hulud: No, I think you're right to a huge degree. I can remember one episode ages and ages ago (Tom Baker era maybe?) where the Doctor was chasing/being chased by a monster/alien of some sort inside the deep coridors of the massive labyrinth that is the TARDIS. After the plot resolved at episode's end, they never mentioned that there was a creature still somewhere in the gigantic ship. The ship is secondary to many things, except for logic.
Not sure how this going to work. The show producers appear to be going for a younger generation. First by getting a younger doctor, and now having kids design the Tardis interior. However I live in NY and my cable provider doesn't offer BBC America. I want Dr. Who back.
@Mike Johnson: I'm not certain they're aiming younger necessarily; the show has for a long time bridged the gap between youth and young adult (and older adult) rather successfully, and I don't think they'll shy away from those eyes. If I remember correctly, the blobby monster that absorbed people from several seasons back was also designed by a child (perhaps also on Blue Peter). The show has a history with Blue Peter for promotional things such as this.
@KhaiJB: Even if the Doctor COULD change the outside of the TARDIS I really don't think he would. Aside from it being one of the most iconic vessels in SF television, the guy driving it is over 900 years old. At that age, it's hard enough trying to remember where you parked: imagine also having to remember WHAT you parked!
@Discodave: R.O.A.C.H. M.O.T.E.L.: Maybe it will be an alternate console room used in only one episode (think Tom Baker's wood grained "spare" console room from the 70s.
@youngjeune: I hold the unpopular opinion of rather preferring haughty, bitchy Romana I, almost exclusively because she treated her regeneration like a trip to Nordstrom's. Brilliant. I do wish she would've stuck with the blue skin, though.
It's better than the flying discotheque sign, but the DW TARDIS logo is pretty lame. Hopefully we won't see it during the actual credits, and it will only pop up on the underside of toy packages and during next time trailers.
It does look marginally better in the longer format:
At least the immediately-previous, orange oval logo looked like some money was spent on it; this one looks cheap, and the typeface is horrible in a 1990s t-26 way. The letterformed-TARDIS is a cute idea, though. Overall, the type snob in me is underwhelmed-to-annoyed.

No, it looked like something that would take about half hour in photoshop.
Something -I- could do in half hour in photoshop, and I'm not that good.
(well, ok, youd have to let me use paint shop pro, but really, that last logo did not look like any money or time was spent on it).
That said, money or time shouldnt be spent on logos anyway. Just do something simple, and whatever it is, your shows quality will be associated with the logo NOT visa-versa.
It's a freaking logo people! It's not the end all and be all of the series. What is it about fans that make them want to pick apart every little aspect of a shows existence? A little bit is fine and even fun, but after a point it just distracts from the important bits. Like are the stories good, can the actors act, is the stories logic fairly sound, etc.
For gods sake we haven't even seen the poor kid act yet. Let's leave the guy alone and see what happens. Personally, I'm excited.
@Jesse Astle: Calm down, have some tea.
We're just excited - it's been months since our last story, and it'll be at least another month before our next one.

But, frankly, all the Doctor Who logos suck.
Bring back really plane text and spiffy feedback effects, imo.
