@an aching taste of blue: So, the increase in Greenhouse Gases now causes a drop in temps? Or do 'Greenhouse Gases' function differently depending on who's looking for funding?
The danes are from denmark, copenhagen is in denmark. The dutch are from the netherlands. They are two completely different countries who dont even sound alike
I have a bone to pick with the keywords assigned to this post. This is really a climitology and geology issue. Anthropology is only incidental to it. So why cast it as "mega anthropology?"
@corpore-metal: It's a stretch but she did find the link on a anthropologist's blog. The drier climate of East Africa created the savannas and affected the evolution of our early hominid ancestors. Later on we had figure out making shelter and clothing to survive in the year-round winter wonderlands above the 30th parallel.
Can we actually say what happened worldwide based on one core of ice the diameter of a baseball? Perhaps that area changed that quickly, but other areas did not.
@RAHfanboy: Notice those boxes and boxes stacked behind him in that refrigerated room? Well, imagine all of those filled with thousands upon thousands of ice cores taken from all over the world and brought to a central lab to study. Imagine it to be like that warehouse in Indiana Jones where they dump old artifacts.
Now holding the example of each and every one of those ice cores in your mind, think back to your original question, and try not to explode when you realize how dumb that was.
@Pope John Peeps II: Having one of your "bad days" again? I asked a perfectly valid, logical question that in no way deserves that sort of abuse. If at some point you feel like actually dealing with the subject (i.e. does evidence from one relatively small area, necessarily hold for the entire planet), and not just venting spleen, come back and try again. Or not.
@RAHfanboy: they actually use cores from all the major ice sheets from all over the planet. some sheets are older than others, but they don't just rely on one small test area.
@RAHfanboy: You aren't asking a lawful question. You ARE asking a question that deserves abuse. You're questioning whether a large group of solidly credentialed scientists who are doing very valuable work are even following the BASIC SCIENTIFIC PROCESS.
Of COURSE they are. This is their profession. The only reason a reasonably intelligent man would even ask that question is because he fundamentally disagrees with their project. Which, I know you do. And I cannot have patience with anyone who doesn't recognize the validity of climate change. The world is too far gone to bother with that right now.
I dated an Ice Age once. She was a Philosophy major at NYU. *rimshot*
But seriously folks, what caused the Ice Ages? Isn't the current thinking that it was a shift in our orbit or a cloud of dust passing though our system that reduced the sunlight reaching Earth?
@Grey_Area: Looks like tectonic uplift and all those continents zooming around contribute to glaciation as well. "Look out! here comes India! *CRUNNCH* Aw heck, we'll never get that mountain range out. Lets put some yetis on it."
Thanks io9, for making me look up stuff to make my brane more smartur!
@Grey_Area: Ice ages were simply caused by climate warming factors in reverse. Volcanic activity kicks up dust, blocks out sun. Increasing ice sheets reflect more sun, earth cools. Far more algae in the oceans used to devour more Co2. Co2 levels used to be a lot lower than they are now (it's the Co2 in the atmosphere that's mainly responsible for this geologic era's happy climate)....
mm... take your pick. There are about a hundred different factors.
Reminds me of all the stones that get returned to Hawaii. Perhaps someone had a run of bad luck and decided the Monkey Paw was better than the Mayan Jaw.
The guilt-wracked Archeologist is a wonderful pitch for a show. It's like Friday the 13th: The Series meets Indiana Jones, with some Post-Colonialism for zest.
