Jean Gray must have REALLY turned god-crazy if she'd think of destroying San Francisco.
Especially when all of Texas was left standing. #xmen

Well, except for Phoenix leaving. Instead, she killed herself because she realized she could become evil again and destroy existence. #xmen

It's overly vulgar, all the characters became caricatures of themselves, the script is absolute shit, they turned Wolverine into a sniveling little pussy, they killed the Cyclops, completely mishandled the Phoenix and wasted a ton of mutants that could have been great additions to the franchise had they been given anything resembling depth.
And I'm convinced they kept the cock-helmet design of Juggernaut just so Kitty could call him a dickhead. Thats just fucking ridiculous.
X3 is 100% shit. #xmen

The reaction I've seen to is is pretty much 110% (entirely justified) hatred. #xmen

The rest sucked, but Frasier-Beast and Prof X dying but knowing he won't die and simply not having the time to explain so he just smiles to let Logan know it will be alright, and the confusion on Logan's face- at least that much was watchable and enjoyable. i just hated everything else. #xmen

Its also being said that in the first drafts that Singer had commissioned, Nightcrawler was mentioned by other characters, though not featured. #xmen

Of course, it could've just been the sheer incompetence of the writing that put this across. #xmen

Keep in mind, however, there was no Watchmen film nor recent Superman film when they were throwing around these ideas. #xmen

Admittedly, 616 Marvel hasn't been any more tactful in how they approach this trope--House of M, anyone?--and I guess it makes sense that a guy lauded by Maxim for being a womanizer would give us a numbingly sexist approach to the Phoenix. But that doesn't make it any less lazy for a supposed reboot of the continuity for film to recycle--with a vengeance--the more cringe-worthy parts of the character's history. I want to be generous with Claremont, and the storyline is of course epic, but I'm getting bored of approaches to Jean as little more than a deus ex woman in refrigerator.
... and then there's the part where she's getting raised by her son in the future. #xmen

And X4 had better be Days of Future Past, or I'll be pissed. #xmen

You actually *read* the comics and realize that there's 30 years of history and perfectly good story arcs done by writers that are - on the whole - quite a bit better than anything you "reimanging" halfwits could come up with on your *best* day, and that with a little thought any number could be adapted to the screen and make perfectly good movies.
Nah... way too radical. #xmen

X-Men in space+ Starjammers + Shi'ar Empire War + M'Krann Crystal in a 2 hrs movie= disaster of epic proportions. #xmen

I think that's why the Dark Phoenix Saga was so much more intriguing to me, because it was about locating the god-like force of the Phoenix and having Jean reconcile those powers in a more intimate way. #xmen

Plus, what would be the point of just remaking the story into another format word by word, print by print? If I wanted to experience that story I'd just read the original as it was meant to be told in print.
When someone like Nolan, Raimi, Singer, Lee, Burton, Del Toro, or hell, even Schumacher (yea I'm going there) gets their hands on a character or story I like, I expect them to reshape and mold them to fit their medium, so it can be told in the best way possible as a movie, and also to add something new and creative that adds to the grander mythos of both of those things.

I still can't believe people could see aliens in Indiana Jones as a bad thing. Somehow Ark spirits and Voodoo priests are more likely than aliens, and for some reason all three cannot intermingle? #xmen

In that sense the X-Men are a good metaphor for the Culture Wars, especially aspects like the religious right's sexual re-orientation programs--certain parts of society are utterly misinformed and think you can just reprogram the 'undesirable' parts of people and leave everything else intact. It doesn't work that way. I'm glad the film showed Magneto's powers beginning to return at the end, because I think that is precisely what would happen in reality. I hope, if they continue the franchise, that Rogue's powers also come back.
11/09/09
I suppose I can't really agree with comparing Rogue's mutation with things like sexual orientation -- being gay doesn't seem quite as extreme as never being able to touch another human being. #xmen

As far as metaphor to homosexuality, I think her powers are especially relevant, in the sense of isolation from most people. Her powers work really well as an HIV metaphor, now that I think about it... #xmen

Like I could see someone wanting to stay blind in order to preserve their perception of everything. It's romantic. But really that person is nuts, that's unrealistic! :P
Why not change? #xmen

Am I claiming Rogue was wrong to take the cure? Not at all. It was her choice and she had valid reasons for doing it. I just don't think she could do so without it coming back to haunt her in some way; I also don't think the choice would be so easy in real life. Rogue's powers do make her special, and they aren't all bad. There aren't too many upsides to blindness that I can see. But then, I'm looking at it from a sighted person's perspective:
Do not take 'seeing' fr granted
"According to May, most blind people do not want to see. He asks, 'Would you want to have a psychic power?'" #xmen

Also, X-Men came before the gay revolution. It's more of a general allegory on misfits. You can use it for gay rights though; which is the magic of the X-Men. Even Jean Paul and Karma came out in the comics not too long ago.
