I absolutely would not want them on my planet - FUCK THAT!!!
Maybe there will be some great reveal at the end of the movie to try to make me feel like a big jerk for thinking that way but I'm sure my feeling will not change.
@Plague: shall I elaborate? given the premise of the movie, i like how they depicted the aliens as emaciated...adding a visual element to their dire situation. also, either they have a metal or some sort of hardened exoskeleton, or they just clothe themselves in anything at hand (i assume the latter), combined with the fluid way they move and their obvious super strength (he jumped 25 feet at least), they remind me of robots. just an observation.
@acrobatic rabbit: They look like insects to me with their quick jerky movements and thin bodies and exo-skeltons. But I could see how that could be seen as robotic.
@Plague: well, I agree with Garrison. robotic in the sense that yes, they're quick and jerky. and really strong. mind you, i'm not thinking of animatronic.
@acrobatic rabbit: most of the characteristics attributed to robots in film are actually inspired by insects. case in point, the matrix. the source of your confusion isn't the appearance of the aliens in D9 but the tendancy for creators of sentiant robots to draw inspiration from insects.
@corpore-metal: as long as we're talking about human beings on planet earth i don't think you really need to qualify who needs the reminder with era or age limits. if there is one universal constant in human history it is that there is always something to be irrationally hated and feared.
@Plague: Oh, like a big budget sci-fi action movie adaptation of one of the most successful video games of all time, produced by the guy who did LOTR was going to make any money. I say they dodged a bullet on that one.
A bullet made of solid gold, diamonds and titties. YOU FOOLS!!!
I'm not sure. We'll see how it goes. I'm not sure I need to see YAF movie about 'intolerance' that is supposed to 'make me think.' I've got enough to think about already. Yes, yes, I get it... human tribes are intolerant of other tribes, and the aliens in the movie are analogous to zzz....
@goldfarb: Yeah, but it's weird. And I'll preface this by saying that it still looks amazing and it's probably not close to done, but for my money "Alive in Joberg" with it's budget effects work a little better. However I've also never seen that in HD quicktime so that could have something to do with it.
I mulled over that cryptic site on and off for a few days, gave up, and really haven't thought of it since - good viral marketing because now I'm like -- "AAAAHHHHHHHAAAA" and definitely want to see this.
I saw an earlier treatment of this years ago on a series on PBS. The documentary approach is done so believably, love the little touches like the man-in-the-street bits and the pixelating the eyes of the aliens to protect their identity. Although now that I think about it, that may have been done to save on makeup costs. If so, it's a brilliant solution and further shows the ingenuity of the minds behind this project.
It's very exciting to see this developed into a feature-length film. This may pave the way for more serious SF projects. My tentacles quiver with anticipation!

I beg to differ. I think our response to them, as portrayed, is very much human, judging from many examples taken from human history.

Uh.... what? What we've seen before, as in, that 2 minute short film he made a couple years ago, or the music videos before that?
Kid still has a lot of proving to do before I get excited to see anything he puts out. I still blame him for sinking the Halo movie.

Being told yet again that intolerance is bad = hell no.
Give me light hearted fun over a obvious message that every other cartoon, scifi and film has been going on about forever any day.
If its just the background plot to the film, fine.
But if its the main thing, it recks of dullsville.

Personally, in this post-Abu-Ghraib, post-Obama world, I think the kids could stand a little reminder about what xenophobia is.
