Cory McAbee's stuff is definitely an acquired taste.
It's a bit like Rocky Horror, MST3K, Svengoolie, or Space Ghost: Coast to Coast -- You either embrace the cheese wholeheartedly or think it's the dumbest thing you've ever seen.
DO watch Stingray Sam if you enjoy surreal humor, bizarre musical numbers, and no budget production values.
DON'T watch Stingray Sam if you're expecting a coherent plot, recognizable actors, or special effects that aren't held together with sellotape.
@Charlie Jane Anders: McAbee is one hell of an artist. (visually, musically, and cinematically) I'm a big fan, and even have one of the original hand-painted "cells" used for one of the first BNS shorts.
I was actually a little disappointed with Stingray Sam in that I didn't think the songs were quite as inspired as the usual BNS fare. Still... it was a thoroughly entertaining and goofy romp, and obviously a labor of love. As with American Astronaut, you only have to look at the credits to see this is basically a project worked on by a couple of guys and their friends, and it's incredible just what they managed to accomplish with (practically) nothing.
I hope that they get enough recognition with Stingray Sam to finally secure funding for McAbee's other full length movie project "Werewolf Hunters of the Pacific Northwest"
Anything has to be better than 'American Astronaut'. Worst. Space. Western. Ever. That's saying something since there like, what, two? Netflix is directly responsible for me seeing SO many terrible movies.

I think the music is better, and the scene in the space barn is worth the price of admission alone:
