@AshThePirate:
They only scrapped the second half. The first half was developed with the budget that's normally used to research the setting and culture involved. Ironically, the first half turned out really well, while the part that they actually put some thought into feels like it was tacked on. #monstersinc
So the original pitch was about a loser with daddy/mommy issues coming to terms with those issues by talking it out with "monsters" in his head and happy ending life gets better.
I don't get how you could make that and have anyone under 16 understand. Would make a good art house movie just no happy ending. #monstersinc
This pitch sounds a lot closer to Where the Wilds Things Are than the final version of Monsters Inc, where the monsters represent the anxieties and fears of the main character.
I've always found it fascinating to see the evolution of a movie from start to finish. Sometimes the movies end up a lot better than their original pitches, sometimes they end up much worse through poor executive meddling, and sometimes they are entirely different movies. #monstersinc
@disatess: The original pitch for Pretty Woman would still make a great movie- I remember that guy that wrote it (and Mistress!) said the original pitch was far different and I think it was darker then what was filmed. I remember reading a humorous piece where he thought he might go back and make the same pitch again, because they wouldn't recognize it. #monstersinc
Legend also has it that female jackalopes can be milked as they sleep belly up and that the milk can be used for a variety of medicinal purposes. It has also been said that the jackalope can convincingly imitate any sound, including the human voice. It uses this ability to elude pursuers, chiefly by using phrases such as "There he goes! That way!" It is said that a jackalope may be caught by putting a flask of whiskey out at night. The jackalope will drink its fill of whiskey and its intoxication will make it easier to hunt. In some parts of the United States it is said that jackalope meat has a taste similar to lobster. However, legend has it that they are dangerous if approached. It has also been said that jackalopes will only breed during electrical storms including hail, explaining its rarity.

Silly, quirky: "Oh noes, I'm still afraid of clowns!"
"Honk honk!"
Horrifying, pants-browning: "Oh noes, I'm still afraid of clowns!"
"We all float down here."
Wait, shit, I DID just describe the concept behind It.

They really should re-release that one on DVD. Henson did it best.
