There is something true about the "used to be good at" quote, in that it does feel oddly "dated."
I think Gilliam was such an influence on so many animators and people in the film industry - even if/especially because he's usually been kind of a fringe character - that his style and look has been adopted, adapted, and expanded significantly by others over the years.
So to see something now that is so straight Gilliam makes me feel like I'm watching a movie from the 80's...even if it is still cutting edge and even though what he was doing in the 80's was ahead of its time. It's not "old-fashioned" looking, it's just visually so similar to his classics from that era that it makes me feel like I'm watching something from that era.
@Charlie Jane Anders: Well, sure, I can see that; but even if I wasn't there I can imagine the root of such a comment, it just sounds a little self-biting.
Something about just reading the words "Zero Theorem" makes me wonder if "Anathem" is on it's way to any kind of production in the future. It's one of his tighter stories, actually. Am I a loon to think it's one of the most visually translatable?
@hectorbustnuts: Yeah, I had assumed they were going to clarify that they were waiting for a 'return to form' or something, after some disappointing work in the last few years. But they seem to just think he hasn't done any work in the last decade? What?
"I have a feeling Parnassus will be an interesting movie rather than a great movie. "
Has there ever been a Gilliam movie that wasn't the same? They've never been great, sprawling masterpieces. He isn't as pretentious as that. He'll do what he wants to do, because he never seems to care about revenue. Honestly, they wouldn't be as good otherwise. If some suit had been breathing down his neck in Time Bandits, *Spoilers, y'all* his parents probably wouldn't have exploded in the end.
I couldn't live in a world without exploding neglectful parents.
@ThisDudeRufus: I would say both Time Bandits and Brazil are *great* movies. In my book, Munchhausen and 12 Monkeys are both good movies. Everything else he's done -- especially since he moved to Hollywood -- has been interesting.
