Not a monster per se, but I think Coyote, the trickster god of many Amerindian tales would make an interesting villain. He'd basically be an Amerindian version of the Joker but with a perverse sense of justice. #moviemonsters

@golemnist: I'd be down with faeries in the Celtic sense. Scary, good looking, some evil some good. This sounds like a perfect match. #moviemonsters

Not that eager to see demon raping and genitalia... But! I am eager to see the Jackalope! The most fearsome...well, sort of fearsome, some people fear bunnies, anyway, the most fearsome creature to ever roam the north american wilderness! GASP! OHHHH! AHHHH! #moviemonsters

@TheGreenRanger: For a really monstrous critter from the tales of the American Frontier the Hodag is a great candidate. It was a voracious predator with a tiny mouth and no teeth. to hunt it spun around like a tornado with razor-sharp claws slamming into a moose or wagon train or whatever. ZzZzZzZinnng! Then the Hodag would slurp up its pureed prey.

I always suspected that Robert McKimson might have been inspired by those old stories when he created the Tasmanian Devil cartoon character. #moviemonsters

@Grey_Area: Dangnabit!! I've been tring to find a citation for this critter. What I'm thinking of may not be the Hodag. I recall in my distant youth a book of my grandfather's that had all these great stories from the North Woods with Fearsome critters and other oddities like the Hodag, theSquonk, the Axehandle hound, Hidebehind, Splintercat and suchlike.

It might have been this book: fearsomecreaturesofthelumberwo...
.com/">[www.fearsomecreaturesofthelumberwo....com] Highly recommended for folklore fans and monster lovers of all types.

And indeed on pg 33 is THE WHIRLING WHIMPUS! Just the monster I was thinking of.
    I wuv my interwebs!!

The Wendigo had a star turn in the eponymous film Wendigo (2001). It stars little Dewey from "Malcom in the Middle." #moviemonsters

@mondojohnson: Wendigo is an awesome horror movie. Right from the opening scene, where a vacationing family accidentally hits a deer fleeing from hunters and an argument ensues, there's a heavy feeling of dread. The tension builds when when they get to their cabin in the woods, find old bullet holes in the walls and realize that the belligerent hunters are their neighbors down the street.

Then the whole supernatural angle kicks in. (Or does it? The viewer is left to decide.) I have no problem with how the Wendigo looks. It's memorable and weird.

It may be cheaply made movie, sure, but Wendigo anything but cheap.

Amen to the Wendigo! There was a movie in 2001 starring Jake Weber (of Medium) that very briefly touched on the Wendigo mythos. (IMDB link [www.imdb.com]) It was more suspense thriller than monster movie, but was still a good watch.

When I was in the Boy Scouts, my father scared us sh!tl3ss with stories of the Wendigo. Sure, they were Americanized-campfire adaptation, but they sowed a real fear of the thing and made the real ledgends that much more interesting now that I'm older.

Which reminds me, I've got a baby boy on the way. (Makes note to tell him about the Wendigo when he's nine.) #moviemonsters

@ThinkandDrive: Ravenos touched it, and not briefly. As they said, it pops up everywhere. It's cool enough, it just needs a major film.
It was also in one of the good Fear Itself episodes #moviemonsters

@Dirk Anger: Ravenous remains one of my favorite films of all time, and the Wendigo mythos I think is so disturbingly alluring that I'd eat the flesh of another just to see more of it in Hollywood. #moviemonsters

There was a fantastic analysis of the wendigo in a book by Margaret Atwood called "Strange Things: the Malevolent North in Canadian Literature". As usual for her, there's a bit of feminist critique in there too, but it's still an amazing and amusing look at the wendigo myth. #moviemonsters

    Some good possibilities:

    Tikiloshe

    Pukwudgie

Adaro (the dark side of mermaid lore--he kills people by shooting fish at them; what's cooler than that?)

    Tikbalang (a crazy-ass lookin' horse monster.) #moviemonsters

Are the fish swordfish? or at least frozen? #moviemonsters
