In reply to The Lost "Cantina Scene" From Abrams' Star Trek
This book had to be made to keep up the Star Trek book tradition. I remember when I was a kid I had the tech manual and the concordance and used them while watching the series every night on channel 39.
I still wish one day they would build the Dreadnought.

In reply to Aliens Come All The Way From Deep Space To Sink Your Battleship
Okay, somebody out there has to make this movie before they do, by cleverly editing together scenes from The Hunt for Red October and Independence Day.

Nervous Ensign: "Sir, the alien ships are strategically dropping depth missiles above us in a grid-like pattern, trying to locate our position! If we move, we're dead, but if we stay here, they're sure to sink us eventually. We need to retaliate by sinking their mothership, but we don't know where it is!"

@Pope John Peeps II: No this was not directed at the author of the story! Just saying that they keep coming up with more and more every week about the DVD. It was directed towards the industry. So relax. io9 is one of my favorite sites ever. I would never say anything in that manner.

So forgive me if it seemed that way. Not the case.

    Peace #startrek

What I like about this treatment is that it manages to sidestep a lot of the implictly Freudian masculinist connotations of the way Jean has been handled--unlike Ratner's film, which made them absolutely, horridly blatant. "Quick! A woman has power, doesn't know how to handle it, and is freaking the hell out! The only solution is for a man to penetrate her!" Womb envy and phallic mothers don't begin to cover it. The female hysteric was alive and well (until she had to get killed/a penis, anyway) in 2006, it seems.

Admittedly, 616 Marvel hasn't been any more tactful in how they approach this trope--House of M, anyone?--and I guess it makes sense that a guy lauded by Maxim for being a womanizer would give us a numbingly sexist approach to the Phoenix. But that doesn't make it any less lazy for a supposed reboot of the continuity for film to recycle--with a vengeance--the more cringe-worthy parts of the character's history. I want to be generous with Claremont, and the storyline is of course epic, but I'm getting bored of approaches to Jean as little more than a deus ex woman in refrigerator.

... and then there's the part where she's getting raised by her son in the future. #xmen

In reply to Did Avatar Really Cost $500 Million?
Lets see, how many ways can this film fail:

#1. It has a hefty cast of well known actors/actresses, one of whom is Sci Fi royalty.
#2: It is possibly the most hyped film of it's type in recent decades.
#3: It's James Cameron's latest film in a long while.
#4: Regardless of whether or not people hate it or like it, people continue to babble about it whenever there is a new trailer/featurette or detailed blog post. 3 guesses how many of the "this film is gonna suck bigtime" crowd will hand over their $16 to sit in the theatre and see how horrible and sucky the film really is.

There's about as great a chance of this film bombing at the box office as there is of another ship named Titanic being built in this decade and also happening to capsize at the hands of a glacier, but considering that it's got a worldwide release, will be monopolizing certain theatres overseas, so I've heard, and is doubtless the most boastful sci fi film to come out in recent times--at least in MY generation, I don't see how.

Meanwhile, I'm very sorry to hear about this "Squeakuel". #avatar

I'm not sure if "most boastful" is something to... uh, boast about, but I would think that LOTR (not sci fi, but whatever) would still hold the crown as the definitive blockbuster of this decade. #avatar

Thank you for a more thoughtful post than Matts over at Gizmodo. He simply stated that it was a $500 million dollar movie and the trailer was "big blue crap" in your face.

At least this put things into context and even took into account that NYT may be exaggerating a bit with this. #avatar

Why the heck should Rogue have to come to terms with who she is? Her mutant power is nothing but a curse. Zero physical contact with anyone, ever (unless it's for plot reasons). In the comics at least, she had absorbed some superpowers. In the movies, she's just a moody teen who has to wear long gloves. Saying she should accept who she is, is like telling Typhoid Mary that she should just get used to the island lifestyle.

And X4 had better be Days of Future Past, or I'll be pissed. #xmen

@daveNYC: No, he's saying that it was wrong for her to give up her powers for a boy. Which is exactly what she did - she felt that Bobby was losing interest in her in favor of Shadow Cat, so she ditched her powers so he'd like her again. #xmen

@Dunny0: Seriously, reason number 564 why that movie is just terrible all around. I did love Ellen Page as Kitty though. I wish we could have seen more X-Men with her. *My Wolverine and Kitty Pryde television mini series staring Hugh Jackman and Ellen Page in JAPAN! will, unfortunately only exist in my mind...* thank you chris claremont for the best and most realistic fanboy crush on a comic book character one can ever have. I was 12, inherited 8 long boxes of classic 70's and 80's comics and what do I find? Claremont's classic Wolverine And Kitty Pride mini, in 8.5 condition! (oh how part of me wishes I'd found the TRADE!) I laughed, I cryed, I fawned over a comic book that came out 2 years before I was born. Is it weird now that I compare all of my beaus to the beautiful, courageous Kitty? #xmen
