As being a long time follower of the space program. That was the coolest thing I have seen in along time. OMFG! The Apollo missions are imho the greatest scientific / exploritory achievement the human race has accomplished to date.
@Shikome: I watched it 3 times now and I'm still kinda speechless.
As a kid, I used to keep newspaper clips about the space program and at one point I wrote to NASA for pictures, which they sent me, for free. I also followed with great interest the descent of SkyLab in 1979.
That is to say, I'm a total sucker for space-related stuff.
@Roklimber: Oh I love it all. The Crawler is my favorite Earth bound vehicle. There is a competition for tickets to the last shuttle launch, and I just don't have the heart to enter. Its just too sad.
@Roklimber: That is a beautiful picture. I remember seeing it the one time I was at the space port. It was so cool. I just wanted to run over and climb on it. But there were heavily armed men who looked like they would not approve.
@LittleDragon: You allowed yourself to be stopped by a mere group of armed men? Who are you and what did you do with the evil genius I've come to befriend and respect here?
@Roklimber: Even evil geniuses know to respect a squad of special forces. Especially when that EG is 18 and completely cut off from all resources, at the mercy of education facilitators.
@LittleDragon: Baloney! The LittleDragon I know would have thrown a couple of mini-blackholes towards those so-called facilitators and then she would have teleported the crawler away. :)
@CryptoSolipsist: @Im_your_Huckleberry: @TickMan: I base my self classification on Answers.com definition in which the difference between the two is the second definition for Geek: A carnival performer whose show consists of bizarre acts, such as biting the head off a live chicken. #starwars
@bookling: The first one had two editions. The first had the simpler animation, the second had a cleaner animation more in line with this one, dubbed the "Special Edition." Maybe that is what he meant?
I don't understand the amount of people attacking Lady Gaga here for the most random of things. Compared to the stuff this site normally goes insane over, none of this criticism of Lady Gaga is warranted. I don't even like her, but how can you call her a copycat, a capitalist (what?), or random.
Just a bunch of jealous bitches is what i09 has become. But the second Joss Whedon does something, there will be about 300 comments promoting him as the next Jesus. #futurism
@KassiaHaoe: Actually, no, it's just all purpose omin-directional hating. The next time Joss Whedon does something there will be 300 comments saying that he sucks, has always sucked, and anyone who defends him is a brainwashed cultist. #futurism
@DrLocrian: Okay. Go look at the Dollhouse is Cancelled comments and see the outpouring of love for a show I bet half of them never even watched. #futurism
@KassiaHaoe: It's just the flip side of the same coin. Everyone hated Sarah Connor Chronicles until it was cancelled, and then suddenly it was the greatest show evah.
Just wait. The ever-present haters will swarm that thread like locusts very soon. #futurism
@DrLocrian: I thought Sarah Connor got decent reviews, outside of the fact it was a giant timeline mindfuck that ruined tons of premises. I mean, if you are doing a timeline story, you can't keep it going. See: Chrono Cross.
But I digress. Dollhouse was never a well respected show. And Joss Whedon is not some amazing visionary. If anything, he's the Peter Molyneux of television. Sure, he had a good idea here and there, but in general he's all talk. Though it is a bit of a harsh criticism on Whedon as Molyneux is a pretty horrible person. #futurism
@KassiaHaoe: I'm talking more about the general tone of message board commenters than critical consensus. Generally, io9ers will pick at every nit until it bleeds and hate on anything and everything that someone likes with any enthusiasm whatsoever, provoking equally exaggerated defenses of whatever it is. #futurism
she tipped her hand with this video. while i enjoyed the catchiness and pure danceability of "Poker Face" and "Just Dance," the continued vapid rich-bitch theme in the video for "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich" convinced me that she actually was shallowly promoting conspicuous consumption; a product of me-me-me gaudiness, the weird flavor was just shock value to contrast with the princesses and sex kittens that have dominated radio. it's troubling how many (young) people will take Lady Gaga at face value and praise the spoiled party-girl attitude, but those poor souls will find justification anywhere they look. i'd dismissed her as enjoyable but distasteful; nothing to seek out or support.
but this! there are just too many references -- sci-fi, horror, camp, cult, exploitation, pop/metal -- for this girl to not be genuinely interested in imagery. and i find that interesting. and encouraging. here's hoping it's commentary and not just capitalism.
