A spider man musical? This is the second time ever I hear of it. The first time was on the web-tv-show-thing called Hate by Numbers, over at cracked.com.
I feel abit underwhelmed by the idea. Then again, there was Dr.Horrible, it had a superhero, and the story was told by song. But Dr.Horrible was as much humorous as it was serious. I don't think a fully serious atempt would work out. #spiderman
@Pijus: Because there's no such thing as a serious musical with over-the-top characters? It's a good thing no one told Stephen Sondheim that, or else we wouldn't have Sweeney Todd. #spiderman
I have wondered for a long time who they thought their target audience was. I have a lot of varied friends and I do not think I know a single one that likes comic books and big budget musicals #spiderman
@Franknbeans: So your friends would love this show if it were a small-budget musical? I could be wrong, but I don't believe the budget size will affect the quality of the show too much one way or another.
I love comics and I LOVE musical theatre. The show fills me with dread not because I think the two shouldn't be mixed, but because the creators have not shown to me that they understand and respect the source material.
Some of my favorite musicals were based on comics. #spiderman
@Franknbeans: Well, I love most of the score to It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman (don't judge it based on the horrible TV movie version!) Admittedly, the other great comic musicals were based on comic strips rather than comic books, but there is an interesting R. Crumb musical. Great comic strip musicals include Lil' Abner, Annie, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, and Doonesbury.
I would say that the only thing that concerns me about mixing musicals and comic books is that superhero comics are heavily based on action and battles, whereas musicals need to be more about plot and character. But I think it can be done, albeit carefully. #spiderman
That statement makes me think of the music that's always in the Spider-Man movie trailers, which I still can't decide is either a good or bad thing. That stuff always seemed a little...off, for Spider-Man.
@YamkaJibsheet: Agreed. And "operatic" for a Broadway person can mean anything from "Light in the Piazza" to RENT, depending what element you're referring to.
@Lassus: Yeah, except they're not calling it a musical. They're calling a - I'm not kidding - "circus rock-'n'-roll drama." Oh, and it apparently has little to do with the Raimi movies, which makes sense - why take anything from the most popular version of the character ever?
@Lassus: Me too. I was thinking we'd get to hear it either way, as maybe they'd release the music to help mitigate the lost funds. But how likely is it there's an release-quality recording of anyone performing the songs at this point? Not. Very.
If 'save the day' is code for 'cast the script in concrete and chuck it off the Brooklyn Bridge', I'm all for it. Bonus points for turning the Times Square display board into the world's largest bugzapper.
Nice one Bono. Does that mean it will be incredibly unwatchable and disapear up its own arse during the third act??!! Maybe we could get The Edge in t do all the music. Or at least one rift so we can copy and paste! Oh yeah....and who thinks the new 'Bono' Spiderman will give his spidey mask to the pope at the end of the act. I do! It will end world hunger and bring peace to the universe...includng Mars! Oh and if its going ahead......they MUST use those 3 costumes in the picture!

"Anything you can do, I can do better" with Peter and Ben. Who wouldn't pay to see that?! #spiderman

Bit of advice to Bono... This time, when Peter does jazz hands, I better fucking see some spirit fingers or I'm walking out.
