Good god, the only thing that would be worse than a live action Akira movie would be a live version of Evangelion... Oh yea. Shit.

I hate to celebrate the passing of any project, but I'm at least not sad to see this go.

Is like when dredd came out. In the cinemas it didnt do to bad and dispite bad/good reviews. The one thing reviewers latched onto (stupidly) was how it looked like Blade Runners city, how the cityscape had been forged in The Fith Element. How Dredds no holds barred attitude about law was like that of Robocop. Yet everyone failed to undestand the source material was older than most of those films it was compared too.
My point is, keep Akira a cartoon. Dont let Hollywood fuck it up because theyve run out of ideas. It sounds awful, but I would rather hear about another High School Musical (Belch), than Akira getting the 'live' treatment!!

I dont know about this. After all they planned to film the MANGA and not the anime.
The two only share characters and some plotline, the Manga takes it in a WHOLE different direction from the once you get to King Tetsuo.

It is a classic, just like Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King. Lets not forget, the Buck doesnt stop at Disney and Pixars mammoth studios.

"A film that not only revolutionised animation and western concept towards Japanese art/cartoons. "
Thats utter bull it revolutionized nothing. Come back here after watching Nausicaa or Castle in the Sky.
THOSE revolutionized westerners concepts toward Anime. Its a well known fact that Pixar wouldn't be the company it is today if John Lasseter had not been a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki.
I am sorry but the credit of Akira showing how "adult" anime could be is extremely overblown. Its a great film, dont get me wrong, but it really didnt mainstream anything.
As it is today, anime like Akira is still not mainstream. I highly doubt I am going to see the new Battle Cruiser Yamato here, and I sure know Ghost in the Shell Innocence didnt get a wide release here.
Howls Moving Castle did though.
