I might be the biggest 2000AD/Dredd fan on here at io9, ive been reading 2000AD since 1984 and have every weekly/monthly/graphic novel/mug!! So i think its fair to say that my opinion on Dredd the movie is valid. I personally thought it was flawed but awesome all the same. The one thing that annoyed the hell out of me was my friend kept saying 'ohhh doesnt the city look like the city in fith element'....surely not!! Mega city is older in the comics than that or even..Blade Runner. Now Carlos Ezquira (a personal friend of mine for the last 4 years), who created Dredd always notes that Dredds apperance was designed around Clint Eastwood. Now depending how old they make dredd in the film..(yes he's a clone but he ages)..depends on the casting. Personally I think they should make him older, wiser and more hardened to the street. Thus Eastwood could play Dredd..how it was always meant to be! Maybe even the inclusion of Judge Death!!

To be fair to Meredith, it isn't exactly a shocking twist in the
novel--I had no idea what it was about when a friend gave it to me, and
I figured out the organ scheme within the first twenty pages.

In fact, I'd argue that it's much more obvious if you already have a grounding in sci-fi...

A-Calling it a "cloning drama" is completely screwing up how beautiful and fantastic a ride the author has made because it's NOT ACTUALLY TALKED ABOUT UNTIL THE END. And never even that explicitly. WHY do people have so much fun ruining the end of a good story just to describe the story? It's like the posters for City of Ember all over again.

B-It's not like The Island, it's NOTHING like The Island. The society has advanced to the point where we have clones and they use the clones for organ harvesting.

Gee, never heard that story before.

That is the only similarity they have. They aren't even clones of the people who get the organs.

It's a fantastic novel, I think it would make a good film, but for the love of heaven why does everybody have to say things like "This movie is just like that movie" when they're only superficially similar? Somebody even said City of Ember was like The Island. GAH.

@Ghost_in_the_Machine: Not ruined--I think a lot of readers probably knew the 'twist' going into it, since it was sort of this big "Hey everybody, Ishiguro does sci-fi!" thing when it came out. But it's not written as a thriller, so it works--the mystery is more of a sort of low-key, lingering malaise that unfolds over the course of the novel. If I recall correctly, most of the student/clones themselves actually know about who/what they are, but it's not made clear to the reader exactly what's happening til the end.

    Definitely worth a read.

@NorthernWhistle: You said it best! It's absolutely worth a read even if you know the ending beforehand, it's a brilliant book.

I liken it to slow disclosure in films. Yes, it colors everything that came before and it's best if you don't know, but it doesn't make you not like watching things again.

I just get mad because people love going around saying the endings to things. If I _want_ to know the ending, that's fine, and it's not always ruined. But if I don't want to know...then why say it?

Really? I mean, I sometimes think it's silly to try and shield oneself from spoilers but "illiterate moron"? Not wanting to know a spoiler makes you unable to read? And he was actually saying that one can still enjoy the book (as well as many other twist ending stories) even if you know the end.

Such an incredible book. And everything about Kiera Knightly makes sense to me in this role, except I'm not sure she's a good enough actress.

The problem is, I can't think of someone similar who is a better actress to recast this with.
