I won't say it's wrong to consider Gotlieb the "Mother of Canadian Science Fiction", but I think an equally good case could be made for Judith Merril (although she was born in the US).
@fheywood: Sure, but she's the one with the book collection, the history in the community, the anthologies, etc. -- she was married to Frederik Pohl, for goodness sake.
Gotlieb seems to have an award I've never heard of named after her first scifi book. I guess that's something.
"a poet with a cosmic perspective who elevates space opera to high art."
UGH. Cripes. Just so you're all aware, the book blurb between-friends trade is egregious and ridiculous worldwide, but in Canada it's particularly bad since everyone in these small fields knows each other. Book jackets are literally sopping wet with author-on-friend love drool. Don't ever trust a Canadian book blurb.
@Pope John Peeps II:
As much as I'd like to defend the nation of my birth, I can't. Your description of the incestuous world of Canlit is all too accurate.
@Pope John Peeps II: I dont trust the Canad......ARRRRR, Only kiding my Canadian friends. Love the Americans love the Polish...love bloody everyone!!! Im in a kind of 'LETS ALL HUG IO9 DAY' today!.....sorry, but we should all hug.....Im virtually hugging a tree right now!
@Pope John Peeps II: I salute our gushing moony-eyed Neighbor to the North. O Canada, home of the smartest, bravest, most attractive people in the Universe. ...a pulse-pounding thrill ride and delight to the senses. If you visit only one country this year, make it Canada!
Okay, now you make up some nice lies about us, right?
@Grey_Area: I acknowledge the kind remarks of our southerly neighbours (we‘re going to pretend Alaska doesn‘t count for this). Dear United States of America, the cultural Mecca of the world. Where all art, entertainment, and knowledge of any value or importance originates. You are the most creative peoples in existence, the most forward thinking, the most open minded. Nations of the world, if you strive to emulate any nation of the world, make it the United States. Also; you’re right, hockey isn’t as fun as baseball, NASCAR is a sport and our healthcare system blows.
@Grey_Area: America is a nation gushing with vitality and sweet corn syrup. It's everything you could want in a country, wrapped up in a pancake, stuck on a stick and deep fried in awesome.
Definitely the end of an era. Hard to remember a WorldCon at which he wasn't a frequent panelist. Had a significant impact on the field of written science fiction, and brought a lot of transparency to the business side of the field.
@Chip Overclock: Indeed. Here in the Bay Area, we had the pleasure of his company at smaller cons throughout the year. I just saw him a couple months ago.
We shall not see his like again -- a walking compendium of the industry and the fandom, liked and trusted by all sides.
Mr. Ballard blew minds and twisted perspectives like few others. I am very glad for every page of his I ever read and look forward to sharing him with new readers.

They already say that it will go on without him. I didn't even recognize the names on the masthead beyond Charlie, Wolfe and Clute.
