@KinoEscalate: Not liking Greer's over the top aggression, but I do like that when ordered to shoot he shoots. No hesitation taking down one of their own when given an order. I find "good guys" on tv are way too afraid to use their guns- most of the time you'd think this was the 80s all over again, when good guys only shoot out the tires of people trying to murder them.
I know that with any new show that it takes a few shows to set up the plot, etc... However as someone who has watched all 10 seasons of SG-1 and all five of SGA, this show is quickly falling of my radar. I used to watch the other shows with my kids, and they loved them. We couldn't wait until Friday night. But after the first 5 minutes of eposide 1, that will no longer happen. So much for a good family show. I'm very disappointed with the acting, plot, and how un family friendly SGU is. I've watched the first two nights, and it needs to pick up very quickly, and lose all the sex scenes, completely not apprioriate.
@Pope John Peeps II: The gate is essentially just one monolithic piece (ok, two, if you consider the moving ring). A ship is a significantly more complex piece of equipment. The gate doesn't need to scrub CO2 for humans to survive, for example.
@Roklimber: Then again, gates are exposed to elements, the ship is in a vacuum. Plus, it was unmanned, why was it scrubbing oxygen at all? Those systems should have been pristine.
I've watched these opening shows and enjoyed them, but the whole SG world is unknown, and a bit confusing to me. Could io9 do a primer on SG? How about somebody recommend some good SG1 eps from Hulu to watch?
@lava: "How about somebody recommend some good SG1 eps from Hulu to watch?"

@Roklimber: SG1.04.06.Window of Opportunity **
Only two stars?! Are you mad man, thats the best episode of any of the series! Mostly because of Oneil and Teal'c playing golf through the wormhole.
@ShadRS: "SG1.04.06.Window of Opportunity **

Oops... you're right. That *was* supposed to be 3 stars. I agree it's one of the absolute very best eps.
As for the other people's comments, everyone's tastes are a little different. I like eps that are character oriented or story oriented or simply very funny. Some eps in my list are not particularly good in the first or last category, but are important for someone who has never seen the show to understand some bigger issues.
Citizen Joe is a funny ep which summarizes the past and, more importantly for SGU, gives some basis for the communication stones.
I make no claims that my list is the best or most accurate list that could be compiled. It's simply *my* list.
@ghostofoldtrafford: Space race sucked, But Citizen Joe was one of the best episodes ever! When they ask Jack why he didn't think it was weird that he daydreams about being a barber and bowling he just says "it was relaxing" and it was hilarious. Plus, Jack's favorite show is the Simpsons and he is trading thoughts with Dan Castelanetta- I love that kind of stuff.
For Atlantis, just watch season 4- it had the best stories and character development, and Weir was gone- she dragged the first 3 seasons down. not to mention, I have no idea why anyone liked Dr. Carson Beckett. I was much happier with Jewel Staite in the infirmary.
@Roklimber: You know what it is- I have 2 main complaints about Stargate; first, everyone in the galaxy speaks English, and usually with an American accent. Seeing as how there was nothing close to English in ancient Egypt, which is the last time Goa'ulds deposited or took humans from this planet, it is pretty damn silly that the universe is populated with such a convenient language.
Second is the utter dearth of non-human lifeforms. While I would love to see a more diverse (and creative) array of life, when we do see non-human life it sticks out as an awkward reminder of what the show is sorely missing, and then that alien life is quickly forgotten by the next episode.
I do like the many lighthearted episodes, and on that level it may work, but it didn't make sense that aliens we have never seen before are so friendly and working with SG-1 side by side. It felt like a Star Trek:Voyager episode that they never filmed, so they just changed some names and shot it as SG-1.
@BlueBeard: Those are fair objections, but they apply to all sci-fi shows, really. The thing is, until we meet some real aliens who also like to dabble in acting, all tv-show aliens will look humanoid and will speak the language of hollywood. Nothing much that can be done about that. #stargateuniverse
My problem with the episode: They found a way to override to four other gates, at least one of which had breathable air and plant life. At the end of the episode, almost everyone is near death and barely breathing. The CO should have ordered everyone and their equipment thru the gate to that habitable planet. Facing the odds together, with equipment, on a planet with air and vegetation, beats laying down in the corridors and dying in the broken ship as the air runs out.
@EBone: You missed the point of the two deserters. Eli tried to call them by radio and couldn't raise them. They might be just ignoring him or the might have been killed by carnivorous rabbits. What if the plants are poisonous? What about alien bacteria or viruses they have no resistance to? Without some recon first, it would be foolish to make that kind of gamble with everyones lives.
@Ghost_in_the_Machine: The air was gone to the point people were lying in the corridors. The ship is due to jump away from the sand planet and the other four gates in less than five minutes, and still no sign of the survey party with a solution. Could be weeks before the ship is in range of another gate or planet, if not years. The possibility of survival vs. sure death from suffocation should have been enough to have the crew lined up to go thru the gate as a back up plan.
@EBone: It makes sense to have the crew lined up to leave, but their only choices were death on a space ship or death on a desert planet. I'd rather suffocate than burn to death without water.
The Senator's wife? I didn't like the drinking crying stuff, but on the other hand the threat at the end might actually be interesting. Think about how our government treats real threats to national security secrets being revealed.
They would:
1) Have some one high up talk to her, my guess would be the wife of the President.
2) If she won't shut up and then goes to the press they go to the editor's publisher. ,(Like the New York Times was told to sit on a story for over a year by the Bush Admin)
3) She puts it out on the Internet.,
Go into discrediting mood. "Right, we have bases on other planets and the Senator walked through a "Stargate" and ended up on an ancient Space ship. Tin foil hat time!"
The late Senator's wife has a drinking problem and sadly she has been overcome by grief after the tragic crash of her Husband and daughter last month.
4) Give part of the real story to someone credible and then show a component of the story as totally forged. ,This is called the "Look at the Kerning Technique" used by the right wing to destroy Dan Rather in the Bush TANG 60 minutes show. They gave a real story to someone but delivered it on a bogus document. Then if they want to destroy the real story they reveal the forged nature of the document or the UN-credible nature of the source.
When we wanted a war the Yellowcake documents were faked. We attacked Valerie Plame and her husband when they revealed this. When we wanted intelligence for the war we took the word of "Curveball" an alcoholic known liar friend of Chalabi and inflated his words to gospel truth via Judith Miller. Doug Feith found this "Curveball" info and didn't bother to use the data from the CIA that said his intelligence was flawed because the guy was a known liar.
This is how it is down in the real world, use the same techniques in the Star Gate world for realism that will ground that part of the story so the other stuff seems more real.
@spocko: Well, Stargate has dealt with people going public before. And they've pretty much used all those methods, as well as outright intimidation and murder.
And let's not forget "Wormhole Extreme"! :p
Best cover EVAH! "She's nuts! That's just a TV show!"
@ghostofoldtrafford: I know, and I liked Wormhole Extreme, but I would like to see some specific references to the Bush Presidency cover ups not necessarily the SG cover ups that only fans would know.
Right now I'm watching Torchwood and I'm getting tired of them giving amnesia pills to people all the time.
@spocko: Given the DoD support all the Stargate shows have received, it's extremely unlikely the writers or producers would make that kind of political reference.
@spocko: I think they may follow this plot point up. Stargate's been on awhile and I could see them finally exploring someone with credibility trying to out the program.
They also "set up" that she drinks a lot, so you could see how that could be used to attack her.
Um, am I the only person who understood that the Priest was a hallucination brought on by heat exposure, being that it was the guy who raised him, and not some 'God has a plan Battlestar religious experience'?
It really does feel like people just want to find a reason not to like it. Doesn't matter what the reason is, they just want one.
I liked it; not quite as gritty as BSG but still better than the campfest that was the last few seasons of SG1 abd SGA.
@Hedgeworth: No, I got that too. Although the other reading that struck me was that the dust entity was using the image of the priest to lead Scott to the water.
Either way, I really liked the way it was dealt with. It's an interesting way of exploring a character with some degree of religious faith as well as a very elegant way of doing a first contact story. Plus, they get full marks for Scott not mentioning what he saw to anyone.
@Hedgeworth: Nah, despite my snarkiness I did think that the priest was merely a hallucination. The only question in my mind was about the whirlwind. No one else saw it, just him, so it could very well be a hallucination as well. In fact, given the way the stargate universe has been up to now, that is the most likely explanation.
It was too vague to be an actual living entity. If that was what they were going for, I think they would have been a little more explicit.
I think the problem that everyone has with the priest and whirlwind is twofold:
1) BSG just ended and was pretty popular. There are a whole lot of similarities between BSG and SGU, especially since SGU doesn't look or feel like the SG1 and SG:A. Whether that difference is good or bad, it is far too early to tell. But it is noticeable. The similarities are grating since the shows weren't separated by more than one season.
People made the ST:Voyager jokes too, but that was just because of the premise of people being lost in a distant galaxy with no chance of getting home. The comparisons died out pretty quickly because that was the only real conenction.
2) Previously, SG was a pretty hard science type of show. The whole premise is that there are no gods, just advanced technology and the liars that use it to enslave people through religion. It is a pretty big shift for them to have the religious aspect so ambiguous. When McKay was hallucinating Carter when he was trapped under the ocean, it was very clear to the viewer that it was a hallucination and even clear to McKay. The writers put that in. Here they seem to have deliberately left that out.
@Bob Ramsey: My thinking is that an ascended Ancient (possibly one of Destiny's builders) is helping them out. There's plenty of precedent in the earlier SG shows.
I watched SGU and Flash Forward back to back on my PVR last night and I must say that SGU held my attention and I skipped much of Flash Forward.
I enjoyed Eli and his reference to Planet of the Apes and also the medic knocking out LDP. She rocks. I disliked the religious references and skipped that section.
I will definitely keep watching SGU but I am only giving Flash Forward one more week to pick up the pace or it's toast.
@it must be bunnies: I loved the planet of the apes bit because it was just so painfully awkward. I could see so many of my friends breaking out into bad, predictable, impressions in a situation like that. And I'd be annoyed at them for doing so. But I loved it here simply because it was so dead on as something the character would do, or people like him would.
@emerson999: I appreciated it because often I am often the one who makes obscure movie references and my co-workers or friends don't get it. Nothing kills a joke like having to explain it.
I guess that is why I appreciate my husband because I can say things like, "I'll buy that for a dollar!" "Daddy would have got us Uzis." or "There can only be one!" and I don't get the dreaded blank stare.
I also appreciated that Eli was trying to put some levity in a tense situation. It fit well with his character.
@it must be bunnies: A character's faith can be an important part of who s/he is. Since I want to know who these people are, I didn't have any problems with the Catholicism in this ep.
Although my curiosity was peaked wondering which whiskey the priest drank himself (nearly) to death was. Because I'd imagine it to be quite yummy stuff, this being the case.
What happens if everyone's rushing back through the gate during an emergency and someone who's dying slowly and can't get up just happens to flop over mid-section so their arms are in the vertical puddle?
I wonder how long that "safety" will last for, or if the crew will find themselves stuck.
Overall, I look forward to what's next, and enjoyed seeing conflicts between the characters — like Rush being kicked in the back — which were reminiscent of Daniel exploding at O'Neill or holding a grudge against Teal'c at some points.
Funny connection: does anyone remember Stand and Deliver? I didn't see it but apparently, James Edward Olmos (of BSG fame) and Lou Diamond Philips are both leads in it. Seeing as how SGU is sometimes called "Battlestargate Universe", that's a fun piece of trivia.
I think the writers really dropped the ball on this one. The people going through the gate arent exactly stupid but their actions were. Eli finds this awesome camera that lets you do long distance recon. Yet this ep totally ignores it! All they needed to do was bring along a couple or three and send them out and they wouldnt need to leave the gate area until one of the whatchamacallits found something significant. I would have sent one straight up about 500-1000 ft just to get the lay of the land. Come on writers, if you are going to introduce artifacts like this then make use of them!!
I liked this episode of Battlestar Galactica. The flashbacks to home, the mysterious God has a plan for you combined with a hallucination/manifestation of God's representative was pretty original. Although I did think they piled on the the past tragedies a bit too much. Parents dead, girlfriend pregnant, abortion, adoptive father dead, all before 20? Definitely trying too hard.
I also like the diversity. It's nice to see a Latino in charge for a change and not be some stereotype.
The creepy doctor with his own agenda whose actions set the whole thing in motion is interesting. Having him be the person that everyone is depending on for help and knowledge keeps us guessing. Can he really tell who is and isn't a cylon? I mean, did he really use the comm stones and get cleared for command from O'Neil?
Have I driven the comparison into the ground yet? :)
I think the reason they had Eli keep going back to the same joke was to show just how nervous he was.

Again, I'm available to punch up scripts!

And let's not forget "Wormhole Extreme"! :p
Best cover EVAH! "She's nuts! That's just a TV show!"

Right now I'm watching Torchwood and I'm getting tired of them giving amnesia pills to people all the time.

They also "set up" that she drinks a lot, so you could see how that could be used to attack her.

It really does feel like people just want to find a reason not to like it. Doesn't matter what the reason is, they just want one.
I liked it; not quite as gritty as BSG but still better than the campfest that was the last few seasons of SG1 abd SGA.

Either way, I really liked the way it was dealt with. It's an interesting way of exploring a character with some degree of religious faith as well as a very elegant way of doing a first contact story. Plus, they get full marks for Scott not mentioning what he saw to anyone.

I enjoyed Eli and his reference to Planet of the Apes and also the medic knocking out LDP. She rocks. I disliked the religious references and skipped that section.
I will definitely keep watching SGU but I am only giving Flash Forward one more week to pick up the pace or it's toast.

Although my curiosity was peaked wondering which whiskey the priest drank himself (nearly) to death was. Because I'd imagine it to be quite yummy stuff, this being the case.

"I liked this episode of Battlestar Galactica."
LOL.
