Ok, the buzz Im getting is that this movie has exceeded expectations. I think I may have to go big screen as opposed to waiting for DVD.

They also gave a dismissive review of "Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0 : You (Are) Note Alone" [www.nytimes.com]

(check out my response to it...though it turns out it actually was the English dub they played)

my point is that these guys are just bored and cynical

but there is a growing disparity between their opinions and popular opinion, or even, opinions of other critics; they're up in their ivory towers, bored with everything, and declaring that there is nothing new under the sun...so lets all just sit around being bored

    *Their song is ending* #astroboy

@CodenameV: But I agree with that review? The movie actually wasn't that great as a standalone.

@Pessimippopotamus: admittedly, but it wasn't meant so much as a movie....I mean the same criticism could be make of the Lord of the Rings films, but that didn't stop them from being the OT Star Wars of our generation #astroboy

@CodenameV: Because it actually worked. Not all adaptations work. I mean they're going to places with Evangelion, but it just doesn't have the same characterization as the original. #astroboy

@Pessimippopotamus: admittedly they had to cut much for time in the second film, because it has to cover 12 episodes instead of the roughly 6 each other one will cover #astroboy

I didn't care for it and I've never seen an Astro Boy cartoon, so it's not like I'm biased. Was it always part of the story to show the death of Tenma's son because it's a massive fail here. It forever shadows the film in darkness because we get to see the bright, wonderful, fully living boy first and sympathize more then Tenma's pain that Astro isn't him more than anything. #astroboy

@AngriestGeek: Yes, I just watched the first episode from the 80s series on Hulu and it was in there. I'm a little disappointed to hear that it's in the movie --not super kid-friendly... #astroboy

@Dis[Con]cordian: It's not quite the same (thanks for the heads up). You see Astro first, not the living boy. It's quite different when you meet the kid first, watch him die, then meet Astro. Very odd storytelling choice because your main character, who should be the focus of your sympathy, now lives forever in the shadow of something else. #astroboy

@Dis[Con]cordian: Whoops. I saw the "reborn" episode, not the origin story...and it's still an odd thing to do. They should have played up the fact that in this version he uses his son's DNA to give Astro his son's memories, so it can be argued it really is him. #astroboy

@AngriestGeek: I agree. After showing this great, genius-level kid, they kill him. At first I was thinking that a movie around this little boy genius will be a fun ride (not knowing anything about the story before hand) but I had NO attachment to the Robot boy afterward. I am in Tenma's camp - Astro was supposed to replace Toby, but he rings hollow. And so does the movie because of it. #astroboy

@Polymath: Not knowing anything either I thought the origin was that he somehow put his son into the robot body. And that scene where takes his son's hat off the robot just drove the mistake of killing the boy off home. #astroboy

On the other hand, Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of Gundam and Astro Boy vet, denounced it.

I was rather disappointed. The voice acting in particular was poor and emotionally flat and the story had a predictability that turned me off. I couldn't help comparing it to Wall-E, and it fared poorly. However, the morosely self-aware combat drone moment was rather good. #astroboy

If you go see it with a real boy, that boy may be disturbed by the scene where a boy is disintegrated by a war-robot.

It's the most emotionally intense movie about a robotic boy I've ever seen. Go see it. But see it soon--the theater I was in had exactly 10 people in it. #astroboy

@Forsakenchild: If you're taking a kid, take him/her to see Astro Boy. Actually, even if you don't have a kid with you, I'd rather see Astro Boy. WTWTA is depressing and weird, but might be better as a midnight DVD thing. #astroboy

@Charlie Jane Anders: Thanks for the advice. I'm a 30 year old kid, myself, and the girlfriend is letting me pick a movie for my birthday. Originally it was WTWTA, but then I saw that Astro Boy was coming... so now my decision making skills have been sliding towards that. Maybe I can be sneaking and say Astro Boy, and then when it is over convince her a double feature would make a much better present! :D #astroboy
