Ultimately, the "Paris is secretly self-aware!" counter-narrative serves the same purpose as her original depiction as a glitzy, vacuous blond: it focuses more attention on her. No more, plz!
While the commercial she did was mostly aimed at McCain, she also poked Obama a little bit, and her energy policy was the best one out of the three.
She's certainly smarter than most people realize - I've talked to people who worked for her, and while she's a pain, she tends to make solid business and marketing decisions, and turns a profit (which is more than most young heiresses manage).
Some of the producer-types who have worked with her have pointed out that she really can sing, too.
As a side note: her old buddy Nicole Richie did a surprisingly good acting job in an appearance on "Chuck" last year.
Ever since I saw Repo! the Genetic Opera, I've had a little more respect for Paris Hilton. I think the character Amber Sweet in Repo! was very obviously modeled after certain women of today and their obsession with plastic surgery and such. I don't know the extent to which Paris Hilton might've had any plastic surgery done (I don't read magazines on celebrities because I have better things to do with my time) but I think she does represent that sort of culture. But taking part in Repo! she was in a way acknowledging the sickness of that culture and making fun of herself a little.
Now it sounds like she's making fun of herself more than a little. I think that shows a little more self-awareness than we previously credited to her.
Or else her agent is the one who is aware, and is capitalizing on our unfounded suspicions that there might be more to Paris than we might admit.
The ultimate test would be to see her interviewed by Katie Couric. If she can name at least one newspaper, I will have more confidence in her than I had in my former governor.
@thesis: Yes, I thought she did a very reasonable turn in that role. And I completely missed the allegory for the part she was playing and I don't think she did now that I think about it. Thanks for the insight!
she is an attention whore, so her agreeing to do something isn't really a reason to give her a pass. to me she is the reprisentation of why other countries hate us.
I enjoyed her musical and thought that the McCain thing was rather clever, especially since her family contributed large dollars to him... and then dissed her.
i can't wait to see her in Supernatural... which is giving me my monster drama for the past two years.
i think paris would be an interesting person to know, if you could get in past the money and the magazine photoshopping. she has a crazy mad novel inside her waiting to get out.
@PostMarque: Well, considering that her grand dad isn't leaving her much of anything once he's gone if at all and probably disowned her to boot, she best earn her keep as best she can now while she's still young because I doubt she'll have any marketable skills once she's an old crag. Sorry for the run-on sentence.
Is there a hidden, self-aware side to Hilton that allows her to play with her own public identity like this, or is she just so desperate for the spotlight that she'll go along with anything as long as it gets her name out there?
It's funny, last night I showed my bf "Once More With Feeling" for the first time. He loved it. And Giles? I'm confused with viewing him in a Father role and a Sexy role.
