Wow. This looks completely horrible. I thought the days of terrible Canadian Action shows was over! To quote Studio 60 "I'm drawing the line on the insanity. Vancouver doesn't look like anything. It doesn't even look like Vancouver. It looks like Boston, California."
@Jesse Astle: LMAO. Most people panned that film because it wasn't Batman or Batman Returns. All dark and gritty and stuff. It was a fun action filled romp, and Billy Zane actually didn't need a muscle suit for his purple spandex, he just worked out hard. I liked what they did with the costume. The silkscreened skull design on it was a nice touch and gave the suit texture and made it pop when the light hit it. The spandex suit for this one looks cheesy. I hope this does ok. I'm not fond of the design but a 21st century update was needed. I'm just not sure as drastic as they went. I would definitely incorporate a hood though. That part I like.
@Dedpool3678: I'm not dissing the movie. I thought it was a lot of fun. Although not the greatest movie ever made. (but this is coming from the guy who loves Howard the Duck so, take it with a grain of salt)
I will at least watch the mini's and give it a chance, it doesn't look like the worst thing that's ever been on TV. And the costume is kinda stupid but it is better than wearing a bunch of spandex, purple spandex...
Next up: A remake of Mandrake the Magician, reimagined as a young Criss Angel-esque stage magician forced into a world of intrigue and dark magic, who faces nefarious threats while traveling to exotic locales, all of which look like Vancouver with different lens filters.
@Mookie: Nah, it's SyFy. They'd cast 'young guy who was in that one episode of Stargate SG-1' as Blake Mandrake, a young, hip stage magician who is about to find out how real, dangerous, and sexy magic is.
What the hell? The Phantom costume is iconic! You can't just go changing it willy-nilly -- and even if you did, there have to be at least a dozen better ways to redesign it. (Personally, I'd give him a kind of deep purple tunic-and-trousers look -- it wouldn't have to be spandex, but it would still be evocative of the original design.)
I mean, what's with that visor? He looks like a dime-store 'Robocop' knockoff.
As far as the rest of this is concerned, fighting pirates in the jungle is kind of the Phantom's thing -- I can't really picture him doing anything else. (Sure, he'd venture into the cities every once in a while, but that was more the exception than the norm.)
The outfit looks fine to me; the skin-tight purple suit, like most of the Golden Age comic book designs, worked for a particular era and its printing technology - this may not be the best of all possible suits, but it, at least, doesn't look completely unwearable. True, the Billy Zane suit also looked good, with the subtle texturing and the underwear-on-the-outside didn't look silly, but the production pressure of a TV show would probably make that hard to keep intact.
In all seriousness, this trailer made me more interested, rather than less - it's completely stock Campbellian Call To Action, but at least they acknowledged the previous media iterations, and it looks like it has a chance of being two-fisted pulp action. 1911 ACP would just be frosting on the cake, honestly.
@Blue_Mage: The Phantom 2040 was inspired. All of these other attempts pale in comparison. And while a costume does have to be updated, that's not the way to go.
@Blue_Mage: I decidedly loved how they managed to make the costume science fictiony yet keep it traditional.
Also I liked the movie´s visuals, it´s the story that makes it so ill received.
I´d rather they tried to influence substance into that style, or use the 2040 inspiration, but both would probably to expansive.
Also the Phantom was dark and gritty to begin with, he was never played by Adam West so please dear film makers stay true to the source or create your own Dark Kight-Off!
At least he's still carrying twin semi-autos... can't quite tell whether they're 1911 .45 ACPs though (the design of which was so effective and popular that they would not be an anachronism even today).

Nonetheless, I'll watch it. Why do I hurt myself like this?

I kinda liked the purple spandex. In fact, I loved it. Including the movie and the 2040 cartoon.
