A "fleur de lis"? You know what this means. Get Robert Langdon there stat! And look, if you rearrange the letters of the phrase, "So dark the booty of pirates",which is a phrase used by the First Mates Templar, it spells out.... Wait, I should stop before I give Dan Brown another idea.

    Pirates be the koolest. FTW

Anything about pirates real or imagined should be on this site. Actually, anything cool should be fair game.

@OldDog1: Pirates are cooler than zombies and they're always on this site, so I agree.

This article was created just so that there could be a 'pirate archaeology' section to the site, right? Because its not actually Science Fiction... but it may be syfy, right?

@Ddoom: Dude, pirate archaeology is a very important science. Not to be confused with pirate arachnidology, which is even cooler.

This is just some tie-in promotion for the Tales of the Black Frigate DVD, isn't it?

@Grey_Area: Are we so cynical that even the booty of pirates is considered viral marketing?

"The sword guard you see above would have rested between the sword and the blade"

Actually the correct term would be "hilt" and it would consist of guard, grip and pommel. Also it was not uncommon for the hilt to have a hole for something like a tassel to hang from it.

So it would not rest between the "sword and the blade" it would be between the blade and the grip/handle.

    Still a neat find.

@corpserotten: Sorry - that was my brain-dead, end-of-day typo. Actually, I was testing you and you, um, passed. Yeah, that's the ticket.

    Anyway, it's fixed now. :)
