Big Triffid fan here. The '81 miniseries was indeed very well done and captured the original Wyndham. In fact, it might have captured it too well.
Don't get me wrong, he was a talented author with amazing vision but his writing was a bit on the slow side. Watching blind people stumbling over the heaths and arguing for NINE hours can get a little weary. This new series with two 90 minute installments will probably flow more smoothly. Focusing on the biofuel origins of the triffid is brilliant.
I just hope the Beeb doesn't rely too heavily on CGI to make the triffids. A speedy, overly fluid motion wouldn't fit. The Calla Lily from Hell look of the '81 version was great.

That said... can we PLEASE have a modern day update of a sci-fi classic that doesn't involve people sitting around and watching BBC1 News or CNN? (especially with the obligatory super-pixely closeup of the stoic female newsreader calmly describing the unfolding collapse of society as we know it)
It was engaging and innovative maybe the first two times I saw it... now it's more cliché than the Wilhelm scream.

Ha! You're absolutely right! They'd have to sit around dramatically listening to BBC3 instead!
If I remember correctly from the book, the Triffids become increasingly more aggressive following the events of the comet. (basically going from dangerous to extremely dangerous) I suppose it all depends on whether they want to start properly with Mason in the hospital or attempt to fill in the back story ahead of time.

- the Book had the comet blindness, the Triffids being farmed for oil and the idea that the Triffids were infact a Russian made Genetic Modification....
the movie had actually very little to do with the book at all...

I love the Triffid they designed for it...
