Some really unique takes on the end of the world. Some others that are more familiar but still really well written. Almost completely readable front to back, with a few exceptions. Must read for fans of apocalyptic stuff. #apocalypse
For me the Apocalypse never jumps the shark, there have just been some horrible movies.
For the most part I don't go to theaters anymore. Why spend $30+ on an evening at the movies when I can funnel that money into home theater upgrades and new blurays. Cheap ass + Jaded + Patience = More enjoyable experiences.
2012 actually looks pretty cool from a "Michael Bay" viewpoint. Hey sometimes a guy just wants to sit down after a tiring day and rock the house with kick-ass destruction.
The best part of 2012 was the io9 "It's a disaster!" remix, with bongos. That rocked so much harder than any movie could ever rock that I cannot now go watch the movie, for fear of diluting the original experience. #apocalypse
It might be more fun to try to come up with which apocalyptic movies are actually any good.My votes go to "The Quiet Earth;" "Night of the Living Dead;" "The Birds;" "Weekend" (which certainly is a picture of a society in total breakdown); and, I would argue, both "Providence" and "Last Year at Marienbad," the latter of which is seemingly set in an afterlife-like mental and moral wasteland symbolic of the actual devastation of World War II. Special mention to "The Beyond," which is one of the most creatively and lavishly sinister "doorway to Hell opens up: hilarity fails to ensue" entries. #apocalypse
Only 4% for Southland, awww come on. That flick really got away from itself. John Lovitz doing "psycho" dialogue with Cheri Oteri? I wanted to euthanize that film so badly... #apocalypse
@Evil Tortie's Mom: R.O.A.C.H.: Gotta disagree there. I actually liked War of the Worlds. I liked the fact that Cruise's character was actually kind of a dick, and not a good father, but still did all he could to take care of his kids.
I wonder if some of the negative reaction to the film is really rooted in the way it brings up disturbing associations with terrorist attacks. If so, then perhaps it succeeded even more. The original book was really trying to drive home to the English audience what it must feel like to be invaded and colonized by a technologically stronger power, which is what they were doing all over the world at the time. Similarly, we see the images of mayhem carried out by our own soldiers somewhere far away and they don't have the same impact as seeing that destruction wrought on our familiar landmarks. #apocalypse
@Briareosdx: In my case, I felt it was a fine movie until Tom Cruise saved the day with the hand grenade. At that exact point my suspension of disbelief cable snapped and I went plummeting into a mild coma, where I could see what was going on but just...didn't...care.
See, up until that point he was a normal guy coping with crazy circumstances just like all the other people in the world. Then he became "saves the day guy", which killed the movie for me. I can't help but feel that had any other person been the actor in that movie, they might have stuck with "person caught up in events beyond their control" and not been forced to insert a "saves the day" scene where it absolutely did not belong. #apocalypse
at first i thought you were referring to the real apocalypse. like it finally happens and no one's interested. 'take a hike Apocalypse! you're yesterday's news! no ones impressed!' #apocalypse
@Bootknife-Jackson: With all these movies, I think that's the risk we run! I mean, imagine if the apocalypse happened and nobody was bothered! Erm, yeah . . . #apocalypse
@Annalee Newitz: well we all stay inside, Surrogates style already anyway, so it'll probably be a good week before anyone really notices... #apocalypse
Someone needs to adapt Robert Rankin's "Armageddon Trilogy" into a film - it's got everything you could possibly want in an Apocalypse, with the added benefit of a sense of humour.
It also has Elvis Presley and a time travelling alien sentient sprout, which can only be a bonus. #apocalypse
