I don't understand the hostility to the randomness of a collectable game. Is it too much of a stretch to consider enjoying the trading aspect of these sorts of games?
I know we're all geeks or nerds or whatnot, but surely if you've the social ability to sit at a table with someone and play a game, you can handle a bit of haggling.
Looks cool - though the cash investment sounds unpleasing. This makes me think of War of the Monsters on the PS2. That was an awesome giant monster game...
As a small point of clarification, the limited "Mega" forms are not inherently more powerful than the "Ultra" forms. They are just different. In some specific cases I would argue the Ultra has more raw power but the Mega offers a distinctly different play experience, offering new tricks to be exploited. No one using the regular/Ultra form should feel at a disadvantage playing against someone who happened to get a Mega form. (But they might be jealous since the Mega forms look cool.)
One error in the review: the Mega forms are not better than the Ultras- they're just different. Different abilities, different specialties, different play style.
Thanks for checking out the game Ed! Regarding mega forms I would also note that a full half of these are obtainable as prize support for organized events, and they are actually different rather than more powerful than their Ultra form counterparts. For example, when the Mega form for TerraKhan has weaker brawl and blast attacks than the Ultra form in exchange for a stronger power attacks and a whole different batch of special rules.
On the collectible issue, it seems like the best way to go (as in Magic) is to just buy singles online, and don't even bother with booster packs. Definitely cheaper in the long run.

I think if you buy a case of boosters you're guaranteed 1 of every monster (Monster Case) or at least 1 of every unit (Unit Case).

Of course, if there's anyone interested in playing at other times, I'd love to play more Monsterpocalypse.
